Chesapeake Fire Department Social Media Comment Policy

The purpose of all City of Chesapeake social media pages is to provide information to the public.

The City of Chesapeake encourages comments and sharing of information directly related to the topics in posts. In order to serve the public interests of decorum and order, the following types of comments will be removed from all of the City’s social media pages:

Off topic from the associated post;

Comments or content that promote, foster, or perpetuate discrimination on the basis of race, creed,

color, age, religion, gender, marital status, genetics, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or intellectual disability or sexual orientation;

Spam or advertisements; and links to other Pages or websites, except for other City of Chesapeake social media pages;

Promote illegal activity;

Promote or oppose a political candidate, political organization or ballot initiative;

Personal attacks against one or more named individuals;

Personal, medical, or financial information that would jeopardize the safety or privacy of any person;

Violent, obscene, or profane comments or content;

Repeated identical comments;

Threaten any person or organization;

Information that may compromise the safety, security or proceedings of public systems or any criminal or civil investigations. To manage City staff resources (your tax dollars), comments and postings are periodically monitored during regular business hours. The City’s social media pages are not monitored for Virginia Freedom of Information Act requests. Requests to inspect or copy public records under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act must be made to the appropriate FOIA Officer. The City’s social media pages are not monitored for service requests. To create an official service request, call the Chesapeake Customer Contact Center at 757-382-2489 or visit www.CityofChesapeake.net/Requests. The comments expressed on the City of Chesapeake’s social media pages do not reflect the opinions and position of the City of Chesapeake, Chesapeake City Council, or its officers and employees. CHESAPEAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO APARTMENT FIRE AT THE AMBER AT GREENBRIER APARTMENTS

CHESAPEAKE, VA (September 6, 2026) – Chesapeake firefighters responded to an apartment fire at The Amber at Greenbrier Apartments, located at 1140 Ivystone Square, Sunday afternoon.

At 12:54 p.m., Chesapeake Emergency Communications received a 911 call reporting smoke and flames coming from an apartment. Firefighters arrived on scene at 12:59 p.m. and found a fire in an apartment.

The occupant was able to safely evacuate the apartment before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters stretched multiple hoselines to the apartment and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire was declared under control at 1:08 p.m.
Fire damage was limited to the apartment of origin. The surrounding residents were able to return to their homes.

The resident of the apartment where the fire originated will be unable to stay in the home. The American Red Cross is assisting the resident with temporary lodging for her and her two cats.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Chesapeake Fire Department is proud to recognize several of our members for their outstanding work on a recent incident that resulted in a life saved.

Their quick actions, teamwork, and commitment to providing exceptional care made a difference when it mattered most.

We are also proud to recognize Lt. Callahan, who was presented with the Chesapeake Police Department’s Outstanding Teamwork Award. Lt. Callahan received the award for her efforts assisting our dispatch center during an exceptionally busy day while the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system was offline for a planned upgrade.

Her willingness to step in and help ensure operations continued smoothly is a great example of teamwork extending well beyond the fire station and across our public safety partners.

Congratulations to Lt. Callahan, Lt. Bissell, FF/EMT Perriel, and FF/EMT Matalon, and thank you for representing the Chesapeake Fire Department with professionalism and dedication! 👏🚒

Today, the Chesapeake Fire Department proudly recognized several members for their years of dedicated service to our department and community.

Today was a great day of recognition for several members of the Chesapeake Fire Department.

The Sons of the American Revolution honored members of our department for their outstanding service and dedication to the community. Congratulations to:

Chesapeake, Va. (August 26, 2026) – Chesapeake Fire Department units are on scene of a residential structure fire in the 1000 block of Sullivan Lane in the Grassfield section of the city.
Firefighters were dispatched at 1:29 p.m. and arrived on scene at 1:33 p.m., reporting heavy smoke showing from the rear of the structure. Crews deployed multiple hoselines and initiated an interior fire attack. As conditions rapidly deteriorated, firefighters were forced to withdraw from the structure and transition to a defensive operation. A second alarm was requested to bring additional resources to the scene due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions and excessive heat.

Four occupants were home at the time of the incident and safely evacuated before firefighters arrived. Due to the extensive damage sustained by the residence, all four occupants have been displaced. The family is making their own lodging arrangements.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury while performing fire suppression operations.

Crews remain on scene while the incident remains active.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Hydrant drills turned into a pretty exciting afternoon!

While E5 was conducting hydrant drills off Hanbury Road on Tuesday, a couple of neighborhood children (a CFD firefighters’ niece and nephew ) stopped by to see what was going on.

E5 crew offered to let them to check out the engine and even spray some water! Needless to say, it was a BIG hit.

We’ve since been told they talked about their experience all day long!

These are the moments that make our job so special. We love being part of this community and creating memories with the next generation of firefighters!

Chesapeake, Va. (August 26, 2026) – Chesapeake Fire Department units responded to a residential structure fire in the 1800 block of Willow Point Arch in the Battlefield section of the city.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 11:21 a.m. and reported smoke showing from the front of the structure. Crews deployed multiple hoselines and initiated an interior fire attack. Upon entry, firefighters located a fire in the kitchen. The fire was brought under control at 11:26 a.m.

One occupant was home at the time of the incident and safely evacuated before firefighters arrived. Due to the damage sustained to the residence, two adults have been displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting with lodging arrangements.
The occupant who was home was assessed by medics and released at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

🚒 Recognizing Service. Celebrating Lives Saved.

Fire Chief Sam Gulisano and members of the command staff recently recognized several Chesapeake Fire Department members for their outstanding service to our community.

🏅 Life Saved Awards were presented to:

Lt. McCoy received special recognition with two separate Life Saved Awards. In a fitting example of the commitment our members demonstrate every day, Lt. McCoy was dispatched to another call for service while being recognized at today’s ceremony—a reminder that even while we take time to celebrate their accomplishments, the work of serving our community never stops.

Chief Gulisano also honored BC Pongratz with his 25 Years of Service Award, recognizing a quarter-century of dedication, professionalism, and service to the Chesapeake Fire Department and the citizens of Chesapeake.

BRUSH FIRE ALONG TRAIN TRACKS IN HICKORY AREA CONTAINED
Chesapeake, Va. (August 23, 2026) – Chesapeake Fire Department units responded to a report of multiple brush fires along the train tracks in the Hickory area.
Emergency Communications received multiple calls reporting smoke and flames visible along the train tracks stretching from Mount Pleasant Road to Etheridge Manor Boulevard. Firefighters were dispatched at 11:58 a.m. and arrived to find multiple brush fires burning along the tracks across several miles. Due to the distance involved, multiple units, including several brush trucks, were needed to contain the fires.
Crews quickly contained the fires to protect nearby residences and property. The fires were marked out at 1:30 p.m. Units remain on scene to ensure all hot spots are extinguished.
There were no injuries reported. The train tracks are currently closed for investigative purposes.
