Notice the clock. It’s 4:30 a.m.

That’s when we were wrapping up debate on the largest budget in Illinois history.

Why the middle of the night?

Maybe because this budget contains more than $800 million in tax increases and nearly $600 million in pork projects.

Instead of transparency and thoughtful debate, taxpayers got another late-night budget vote.

Illinois families deserve better than a process designed to avoid scrutiny.

That’s how Springfield ended the spring session.
I will provide more updates later.

Another terrible budget from Illinois Democrats.

Over $1 billion in new taxes and fees. Hundreds of millions in pork projects. Very little for our district.

No meaningful property tax relief. Nothing to jumpstart our economy. And still no deal to keep the Bears in Illinois.

Illinois doesn’t have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem.

LATEST UPDATE FROM SPRINGFIELD: Just 9 hours remain to pass a budget and make a decision that could help keep the Bears in Illinois.

1. So far, lawmakers have identified more than $1 billion in new taxes to fund what would be the largest state budget in Illinois history.
2. There is no property tax relief included.
3. Chicago legislators continue to fight hard against the Bears’ move to Arlington Heights. The reality is that Chicago is not a viable option. There is no existing location that works, and creating one would require hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.
4. We have been in session for six months. The move to Arlington Heights is a straightforward decision. It is the best location for the Bears, for taxpayers, and for the State of Illinois.

Only in Illinois could something this simple become so complicated.

The bottom line: Illinois cannot afford to lose its founding NFL franchise. A domed stadium in Arlington Heights would position our state to attract Super Bowls, Final Fours, major concerts, conventions, and other events that are currently out of reach—bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity to Illinois.

To answer some of your questions regarding the legislation that would allow out-of-state undocumented immigrants to receive in-state tuition rates at Illinois public universities:

I voted NO.

University bureaucracies love this bill because it means more revenue. Illinois families get the bill. At a time when tuition is already too high, Springfield is once again putting everyone else ahead of the taxpayers who actually live here.

Illinois students and families should come first. That’s why I opposed this legislation.

People wonder why it’s so difficult to track legislation in Springfield. Here are two bills that passed yesterday and to the public are very misleading:

HB1441, which was displayed on the board as “Chicago Lifeguard Age Minimum.” However, the bill had been amended and contained provisions extending TIF districts.

HB3595 publicly stated it was a bill dealing with pet insurance - however, the bill actually set up a whole new agency to regulate Day Cares in Illinois

Whether you support or oppose these policies, the process makes it difficult for the public to know what lawmakers are actually voting on.

Well, it’s 9:45 PM on Saturday night, hour 14 in the capital. They’ve already passed a couple of tax increases, and just gave us the initial draft of a 3,600-page budget that has to be voted on by tomorrow. You’ve got to love the transparency of the ruling party. 🤷🏼‍♂️
