💚 When Community Shows Up 💚
One of the PTA’s biggest goals is community building.
When events go as planned, they’re a celebration of community and togetherness. But when things don’t quite go as planned? That’s when you really get to see what a community is made of.
Last night, our Food Truck Night gave us a little bit of both. 😊
When one of our food trucks had to cancel minutes before the event, our Bret Harte community didn’t fuss—we just got to work.
🍕 One parent immediately got on the phone with Vito’s Pizza, who jumped into action and helped us pull together enough pizzas for a crowd on almost no notice!
🧊 Others grabbed tables and coolers while we made a mad dash for beverages, snacks and ice.
🚗 Parents rushed over to help unload cars as supplies arrived.
🖨️ Parents jumped in to print information we suddenly needed for our change of plans.
💚 Principal Burgess jumped in to help organize.
🙌 Parents stepped behind the pizza table, put on gloves and started serving.
🍕 Parents even offered to buy leftover pizzas so the PTA wouldn’t be stuck with them.
🧹 And before our PTA meeting even began, people jumped in again to help clean everything up.
🎶 And through all of the scrambling and last-minute changes, our favorite DJ kept the music and energy going and supported us throughout!
And somehow, within about 30 minutes, our Food Truck Night had turned into a pretty great pizza party—complete with amazing desserts from Savory Sweets NJ Charcuterie & Dessert Catering
Then, while we held our first PTA meeting of the year, another piece of our community showed up: Bret Harte alumni from East and Beck came to help babysit so parents could attend the meeting. (And if anyone needs a babysitter, message us—we know some great ones! 😉)
Last night didn’t go according to plan. It went according to community.
People saw something that needed to be done and simply asked, “How can I help?” And through all of it, our kids got to play, have fun, eat pizza—and watch the adults and older kids around them demonstrate what can happen when people work together.
That might just be the best lesson of the night. 🐾💚
Thank you to our Bret Harte families, our amazing alumni, Principal Burgess, and everyone who jumped in to turn a last-minute scramble into a celebration of the community we’ve built! ❤️
