Meet Maddy Halverson, Community Engagement Specialist with EWU’s Office of Community Engagement 👋

A Spokane native and WWU alum, Maddy is thrilled to be back in the Inland Northwest, building meaningful partnerships in Cheney and beyond. She’s passionate about connecting students, community members, and local resources—and when she’s not doing that, you’ll find her crocheting, hitting the ski hill or local lakes, rewatching favorite sitcoms, or unwinding in hot yoga.

Meet Jasmin, Associate Director of EWU’s Office of Community Engagement 👋

A lifelong Spokane resident and EWU alum, Jasmin brings a deep love for the Inland Northwest into everything she does. She’s an active community leader, serving on multiple local boards and councils, and is passionate about giving back to the neighborhoods that shaped her. When she’s not building connections, you’ll find her outside enjoying all four PNW seasons—or inside gathered with family and friends for a good board game.

Her current favorite song is Easy - Connor Price

Meet Mark Este, our Director of Community Engagement at EWU 👋

Since July of 2025, Mark has been building meaningful connections between campus and community, drawing on years of experience in civic engagement, student volunteerism, and national service. From AmeriCorps to higher ed leadership, his work is rooted in service - and when he’s not doing that, you can find him kayaking, record-store digging, chasing minor league baseball games, or winning pub trivia with his wife, Maura.

Marks current fav song: Tunde Adebimpe - Magnetic

Unfortunately, this year, we aren’t able to celebrate our office and team accomplishments in our usual ways. We aren’t holding an end-of-year banquet, no final meetings or farewells, and for our seniors, no graduation. In the coming weeks, we would like to spotlight our Eagle Volunteers Leadership team seniors and thank them for their involvement with our campus and local communities.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

LAUREN ESTEY

Lauren is an Elementary Education major with a minor in Special Education. She has been involved with the office since her Freshman year. In her first year, Lauren was an Eagle Volunteer, volunteering at any event or program she could; Harvest Fest, MLK Day of Service, and PrimeTime Mentoring. Later that spring, this turned into becoming a Volunteer Mentor Coordinator for our PrimeTime Mentoring program. The next year she joined the Eagle Volunteer Leaders team, while keeping her role in the mentoring programs. The Eagle Volunteer Leaders is the group of students that plan and execute all of Office of Community Engagement’s events and programs. In the last two years, Lauren joined the office staff team and began coordinating the office’s large-scale events..

During Lauren’s time at Eastern, she was one of two recipients of the 2019 President’s Civic Leadership Award; she was recognized as an exceptional student leader committed to addressing critical issues on campus and in the community. She was nominated by campus/community members and the two finalists (both members of Office of Community Engagement!!) were chosen by EWU president’s, Mary Cullinan. Lauren’s academics still shined through, making the Dean’s List for all 12 quarters in her college career. She also spent 3 years working at Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters in the JFK Library.

After graduation, Lauren will join the teaching force in Washington. Lauren plans to continue to find ways to be involved in her community; giving back, lending a helping hand, and spreading smiles.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

SHELBY SHACKELFORD

Shelby is a Biochemistry major with a focus in forensics and a minor in psychology. She has been involved with the Office of Community Engagement and the Cheney/Spokane communities in many ways during her time at EWU. She worked this past year as part of our office staff as the Food Pantry Coordinator. She has been part of Eagle Volunteer Leadership team for two years. She’s volunteered at many of our events; MLK Day of Service, EagleUP!, and Harvest Fest. Shelby organized hygiene drives at the Dollar Store and Yoke’s here in Cheney. The hygiene drive products were made into care packages and donated to organizations like Blessings Under the Bridge. Shelby has also volunteered for Feed Cheney during her 3 years at EWU as their head waitress.

During Shelby’s time at Eastern, she has accomplished much more than all the volunteering we listed above. She has made amazing connections in her field and friendships that will last a lifetime. Shelby was one of two recipients of the 2019 President’s Civic Leadership Award; she was recognized as an exceptional student leader committed to addressing critical issues on campus and in the community. She was nominated by campus/community members and the two finalists were chosen by EWU president’s, Mary Cullinan. Shelby has also been a chemistry teaching assistant for three years, a summer intern for Spokane Public Defenders Office with their investigators, and a member of the Criminal Justice Club for two years. She also was the president, secretary, and event coordinator for EWU’s Forensics Club.
Shelby was also recently (TODAY) selected by The Faculty of the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics, to receive the Outstanding Service Graduate of 2020 honor. This is the highest honor bestowed by the department for achievement in service to the university and department.

After graduation, Shelby is looking into employment with federal and state agencies in their forensic science departments of chemistry, trance analysis, blood splatter, gun analysis, and crime scene work. She is also considering going back to school to earn a master’s degree in forensic science.

Thank you for sharing your time with us Shelby. We wish you all the best!

GLADYS GREENE

I have been a part of O.C.E for two years now and it has been such a wonderful experience. In my first year working with O.C.E I got to be a part of managing the food pantries on Eastern's campus. This last year I got the chance to be a PrimeTime mentor which was so important getting to spend time with kids who have such bright futures and just need support from someone. Being able to participate in giving food out to students in need, volunteering at different organizations and promoting the importance in helping one another has opened my eyes even more to what a great world we live in.
The accomplishments that I have had while being at Eastern was creating a strong community. From my professors who became mentors and helped me through this crazy journey I am on, to the inspiring friends that have become family. O.C.E is an accomplishment because I get to surround myself around people who have a passion to make the World a better place just like I do, and I am proud of that. Another accomplishment I have had was being able to participate in research for three years and going to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) to present my research. This has allowed me to believe in my capabilities and has made me a stronger individual.
I am graduating in Spring 2020 with a Bachelors in Science degree. I will be attending Eastern Washington's University for the Masters in Public Health program in Fall of 2020. Once I obtain my master's I will be applying to medical schools to become a physician. I hope as a physician I get to make an impact on the way that the medical field is.

Thank you for sharing your time with us Gladys, we wish you all the best!
