Chelsea is about two square miles. It is one of the most densely settled cities in New England, and for forty years it has been where Central America landed in Massachusetts. 🫓

The first large wave arrived in the 1980s, families leaving the civil war in El Salvador and the violence in Guatemala. Chelsea had housing people could actually afford, work within reach across the bridge, and a century of practice at this, having already absorbed Irish, Jewish, Polish and Puerto Rican arrivals in earlier generations. So people came, sent for relatives, and opened businesses. Broadway filled up with pupuserias, bakeries, money transfer counters, barber shops and weekend soccer leagues.

In 2020 the city made national news for the worst possible reason. Chelsea had one of the highest infection rates in Massachusetts, and the cause was not mysterious. Its residents were the people stocking grocery shelves, cleaning hospitals and driving delivery trucks while the rest of the region stayed home, and they were going back at night to apartments holding more people than they were built for. The lines outside the food distribution sites ran for blocks.

The city came through it and is still working, which is the part that never makes the news. If you have never eaten your way down Broadway on a Saturday evening, you are missing one of the best food streets in greater Boston. 🥟

💡🎉 Happy Birthday to Chelsea’s own Lewis H. Latimer!

Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1848, Latimer was a brilliant inventor, draftsman, author, and pioneer whose innovations helped advance electric lighting.

Today, we celebrate his remarkable legacy and proudly remember that his story began right here in Chelsea!
