A weekend fire at the Lewis County transfer station in Centralia extensively damaged the facility. The transfer station, located at 1411 S. Tower Ave., is open regular hours (7:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.), but customers should expect long lines for the foreseeable future. The tipping floor, where customers drop off their garbage, is only able to operate at 50 percent capacity at this time.

>> COUNTY EASES BURN RESTRICTIONS

Lewis County has modified its outdoor burn restrictions to allow recreational campfires in designated campgrounds and on private lands in approved burning receptacles and to allow the use of solid fuel BBQs.

The change took effect at 12:01 a.m. today (Sept. 3, 2026).

The Board of County Commissioners met Tuesday, September 1, for its weekly business meeting. Commissioners heard public comment, set a September 22 hearing on a franchise renewal for water facilities in county road rights of way, and approved the consent agenda. On deliberation items, the board made appointments to the Veterans' Advisory Board, reappointing Anthony Rogers and appointing Jeremy Schlake as a regular member and Gregory Shadko as a new alternate member, and approved a contract amendment with The Salvation Army supporting homelessness services. In public hearings, the board approved a franchise renewal for View Ranch Water Association and adopted Ordinance 1384, adding a new chapter to county code to address child and dependent adult endangerment involving opioid controlled substances, after hearing testimony from several community members in support.

The Board of County Commissioners met Tuesday, August 25, for its weekly business meeting. The meeting opened with a presentation from Timberland Regional Library trustee Brian Mittge, who updated the board on library services across Lewis County. Commissioners then heard public comment and worked through the day's business: notice items setting a hearing on a proposed alley vacation in Doty and declaring surplus vehicles and equipment, the consent agenda, and a deliberation item awarding a contract for the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds Friendlyville improvements project. During new business, the board amended the agenda to open a previously scheduled public hearing on a proposed ordinance, then voted to continue it to September 1.

The Washington State Garlic Fest kicks off today and runs through Sunday, August 23, at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds, 1909 South Gold Street, Centralia. This year's theme is Rooted and Rising.

Three days of food, live music, arts and crafts, and more than 60 varieties of fresh garlic from northwest farmers.

Reminder: the Lewis County Youth Mentorship Program's Back to School Supply Give A Way and Resource Fair is tomorrow, Thursday, August 20, at the NW Sports Hub, 701 Allen Ave, Centralia.

9 to 11 a.m. is set aside for medically fragile and neurodiverse youth. The public session runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free backpacks, school supplies, clothing, sports physicals, haircuts, and resource tables from local health and community partners.

The Board of County Commissioners met Tuesday, August 18, for its weekly business meeting and worked through a full agenda of county business. Public works items included an intent to vacate part of Mattson Road near Centralia, a maintenance project for a slide repair on Davis Lake Road, and a related agreement with the Washington State Department of Transportation. Commissioners also appointed two members to the Lewis County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, gave notice of an opportunity to negotiate the sale of surplus timber on a county right of way, and approved the consent agenda. The meeting included four public hearings: franchise renewals for two community water systems, the repeal of an outdated chapter of county code covering alarm systems, and proposed amendments to the county's cannabis land use and retail code. The cannabis proposal drew the most public comment and discussion of the day.
