APIC is a grant funded program created by the University at Buffalo Department of Psychiatry that provides an intermediate level of care created through a community-based, psychiatrist-directed Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) Diversion Team partnered with existing local agencies. APIC serves children, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual dis

abilities, developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury, with or without accompanying mental illness. We provide several unique services including intermediate level care coordination, medication management, dually diagnosed wraparound services, and access to mobile psychiatric care. While APIC makes every effort to support the families of all referrals, it is primarily focused on meeting the needs of individuals who can not be served in traditional mental health settings and who would likely require hospitalization or residential placement in the absence of our services.

Best practices evolve. Needs change. New challenges emerge.

That's why ongoing education and training remain essential for the professionals who support children on the autism spectrum. When care teams have access to current knowledge, practical tools, and experienced guidance, they're better equipped to respond confidently and effectively.

APIC is proud to support partners through training, consultation, and shared expertise that strengthens care across settings.

In autism care, the most visible challenge isn't always the root cause. Changes in behavior, communication, or engagement can often signal an underlying need that requires a closer look.

Effective support starts with asking the right questions, considering the whole picture, and ensuring care plans address more than just the symptoms being observed.

At APIC, we work alongside partners to help identify needs, uncover barriers, and support informed decision-making for children with complex needs.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder that emotional well-being is an important part of overall care for children with complex needs.

Children on the autism spectrum may experience stress, anxiety, and emotional overload differently, making consistent support strategies and informed care especially important.

At APIC, we work alongside partners and care teams to help create environments that support both behavioral and emotional well-being in practical, individualized ways.

Clear expectations, consistent communication, and predictable supports can help reduce stress and create smoother experiences for both children and caregivers.

At APIC, we work with partners and care teams to support practical strategies that help children feel more prepared, regulated, and supported throughout the day.
