Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), also referred to as the “red meat allergy”, is a serious and potentially deadly tick-borne allergy. Symptoms often occur after someone eats mammalian red meat. Symptoms can take 2-6 hours, and even up to 10 hours after eating. The common tick associated with this disease is the Lone Star tick, but others have been identified as well. Recent updates to Oklahoma’s food freedom laws are creating new opportunities for home-based food businesses.

FAPC’s Homemade Food Freedom Act Workshop helps entrepreneurs, cottage food operators and farmers market vendors better understand how to legally and safely sell qualifying homemade food products under Oklahoma law.

Topics include:
• What foods qualify under Oklahoma’s food freedom laws
• Labeling and food safety requirements
• Direct-to-consumer sales
• Growing a home-based food business with confidence

Reminder: Our monthly McIntosh County OHCE meeting will be here at the extension office tomorrow at 10 A.M. We will be learning about sourdough and bread baking. Everyone will leave with their very own starter! We hope to see you!

The OSU virtual medical van will be parked at The Mission in Checotah for those in need. 10-3 today.

The OSU Medical Virtual Care van will be set up at the Mission in Checotah on May 13th. Anyone in McIntosh County in need of medical attention is welcome. We will have extension staff there as well with health fact sheets and our community health worker will help link those in need of resources.

Julie Emerson and Kutter Ward attended 4-H Day at the OKC capitol this past week and enjoyed getting to meet State Rep. Tim Turner and other Representatives and Senators as they learned how state government works.
