Teens have opportunities to get creative this summer at the library. First, check out teen art week!

Teen art week will run Monday June 22nd through Thursday June 24th and consists of two creative "camps": an hour of zine making in the morning (11:00am), an hour of nature-inspired crafting in the afternoon (1:00pm), and lunch in-between. Kids ages 12-18 (going into 7th-12th grade) can sign up for morning, afternoon, or both: and lunch is included either way.

What are zines? Zines are a do-it-yourself, hand-made method of self-publishing tiny books and pamphlets. Participants will get the chance to create multiple zines of their own as well as contributing to a community volume.

Does nature art sound tame? Not this time: teens will be exploring the power of oxidation and solar radiation, incorporating stones, shells, driftwood, and other natural materials to create items they can not just enjoy looking at but use in every day life.

There's no cost to participate in teen art week, but registration is required. Signup for morning, afternoon, or both. Visit or call the library, use the event registration form on our website at cheboyganlibrary dot org, or message us here. We can't wait to see your creations!

Join us for our summer reading kickoff at the Children's Trail just two weeks from today!

On Saturday, June 13th, 2026, from 11:00-1:30, the Cheboygan Children's Trail will be full of community volunteers offering all kinds of fun, including many hands-on activities, and everything needed to help kids participate in Free Fishing Weekend. Kiwanis will be serving hot dogs & chips for everyone while supplies last. And you will find library staff on the trail!

The Cheboygan Children's Trail is located in Major City Park, along the east bank of the Cheboygan River. You can reach the trail from Washington Park via the pedestrian bridge, just two blocks from the library, or by parking at the Rec Center (400 Cleveland Ave).

We can't wait to Unearth a Story with everyone this summer, beginning with our kickoff at this annual spring event.

One week until the end of the school year, Cheboygan! Celebrate by making a plan to read all summer long.

Did you know? Kids who read during the summer have an easier time academically when it's time to go back to school. A huge factor in whether kids read over the summer is having access to books, magazines, and more materials that they're interested in. Luckily, absolutely everyone can come to the library to read!

You can even win prizes for reading this summer. Our CAPL 2026 summer reading challenge begins June 13th and continues until August 8th. Every 2.5 hours of reading gets your name on our lobby community reading display as well as a ticket to the prize raffle. The summer reading challenge is free, no library card required, and is open to all ages.

To participate, just record your reading with a reading record form from our library. Then visit the library to report your reading. You can report as many times as you read 2.5 hours!

Prizes for summer reading will be awarded this year by drawing. You'll get a ticket to enter in the raffle for the prize of your choice. The raffle winners will be announced at our Fantastic Foam Finale Party on August 9th in Washington Park. Participants in summer reading need not be present to win, but prizes will need to be picked up in person at the library.

Our thanks to the Library of Michigan for ensuring that libraries across the state have the option to participate in the Collaborative Summer Library Project summer reading theme every year. We're excited to Unearth many Stories in 2026!

Michigan paleontologist and author PaleoJoe will be here on Monday, June 22, at 2:00 to share the excitement of all things dinosaur with the kids and families of Cheboygan. Dinosaur Day is open to all, no cost, no registration, no library card required.

PaleoJoe has written nine "Dinosaur Detective Club" novels for kids in addition to spending many years creating programs to share with school kids and library kids around the state. He's been awarded the Charles H Sternberg Medal for his contributions to paleontology. We're delighted to have him return to the library for the first time in ten years!

Did you know? The lake sturgeon was around in the time of the dinosaurs!

Join us at the library a month from today on Wednesday, June 24th, at 6:00pm to learn more about the "living fossil" swimming in our waters, the lake sturgeon. Local Expert Brenda Archambo will be here to tell us all about them, their history, and their important role in the ecosystem.

As founder, past president, and active participant in the lack Lake chapter of "Sturgeon for Tomorrow," Brenda has a wealth of experience to share about what our community can do to help ensure Lake Sturgeon can thrive once again.

"Sturgeon Among Us" is suitable for all ages. The presentation will take place in the Linda Widrig Neuss Room of our fully accessible lower level Center for Community Programs. There is no cost to attend, and all are welcome.

Congratulations, Class of 2026!

Cheboygan seniors, congratulations on your graduation! We remember you when you were oh, so small, with your cheerful faces and untied laces. You're still just as welcome here at the library.

Whether you are graduating from high school, skilled trade school, community college, or university, we are proud of you and so pleased to count you as members of our community.

Happy & safe graduation celebrations, everyone. We're cheering for you!

Tomorrow is World Turtle Day: celebrate by learning how to protect Cheboygan's vulnerable Wood Turtle🐢

Wood turtles can be found in northern Michigan, but their populations have been dropping: their numbers have been halved in the last ten years. But you can join area organizations in helping them.

The Little Traverse Bay Band Odawa Natural Resources Department has a project banding turtles in Cheboygan County to provide the Michigan Natural Features survey with population data. Area foresters contributed to a woodlands management plan to reduce the industry's impact.

Wood turtles prefer quiet, calm, wooded environments-- which can be found throughout Cheboygan as long as humans (and raccoons) give them their space. Wood turtles are especially vulnerable to disruption in spring, when they are relying on riparian (seasonal) ponds for nesting.

How can you help? Observe turtles in the wild without invading their spaces. Consider their habitat needs when planning your own activities, from hikes to construction. Help them across the road-- but only when it is safe for you to do so.

And learn more about turtles in Michigan! Here at the library, we do have several books that provide a lot of turtle information. Use our 24/7 WiFi to access resources at WorldTurtleDay dot org. Access Michigan library databases from our computer lab.

Turtles have been alive since before the dinosaurs. Help keep them thriving for World Turtle Day!

Unearth the story of Michigan's long-lost past: learn about Michigan fossils this summer at the library!

On Wednesday, June 17th, at 2:00pm, our friends from Raven Hill Discover Center will be here to share fossils with us. Participants will learn about the features of fossils, then will have the opportunity to select, identify, and polish a fossil of their very own.

Space is limited. In order to make sure we are able to include as many children as possible on the day, there will be no registration for this event. Everyone who comes to the library will get to participate until the room is full.

There is no cost to participate in Michigan Fossils on June 17th, and no library card is required. The event is open to children ages six and up. Families with younger siblings are welcome to explore our kids' room upstairs, where you'll find an abundance of books, activities, and resources to support early literacy any time the library is open.

We are so pleased to bring a bit of Raven Hill back up to Cheboygan this summer!
