For the past four years, Jill Black has given Hamilton County something that is becoming increasingly rare in public life: thoughtful, compassionate, community-centered service.
As the District 11 representative on the Hamilton County Board of Education, Jill has been a steadfast advocate for public schools, for the educators who make them work, and most importantly, for the children and families who depend on them.
Serving on a school board is not easy work. The decisions are complicated, the needs are enormous, the resources are never quite enough, and nearly every decision affects someone personally. Yet Jill approached that responsibility with empathy, integrity, and a willingness to listen.
She understood that a school is more than a building. It is often the heart of a neighborhood, a place where children learn, families connect, and communities grow stronger. Whether she was advocating for better facilities, supporting teachers, addressing student mental health, or fighting to make sure historically underserved communities received the investment they deserved, Jill consistently kept people at the center of the conversation.
But what I appreciate most about Jill is that she showed us what public service is supposed to look like.
You don't have to be the loudest person in the room to make a difference. You don't have to seek attention or turn every disagreement into a battle. You can simply show up, do the work, listen to the people you represent, stand firmly for what you believe is right, and leave your community better than you found it.
For four years, Jill Black did exactly that.
Now Jill and her family are beginning a new adventure in Toronto, and while Hamilton County is losing a dedicated public servant and advocate for public education, Toronto is gaining a pretty remarkable neighbor.
On behalf of the many people whose lives have been touched by your service, Jill, thank you.
Thank you for the meetings, the difficult votes, the long conversations, the advocacy that happened publicly and the work no one ever saw. Thank you for believing in public education and in the children of Hamilton County. And thank you for being willing to step forward and serve.
We are better because you did.
We wish you and your family every happiness as you begin this next chapter. Hamilton County will miss you, but the impact of your four years of service will remain long after you cross the border.
