We’re excited to introduce the 16 poets selected for Democracy Speaks, Chattanooga’s new civic poetry pathway at Renaissance Park.
Through a community selection process, these poets were chosen to create original works exploring democracy, history, civic engagement, and the many voices that make up our community. We are also proud that every poet participating in this project was compensated for their creative contributions.
Selected poets and poems:
• Amber Hickey – River Cache
• Cheikh “CJ” Diakhate – Burdens
• Cody Simon – Middle Ground
• Desiree’ “Dezigner” Green – We Shall Overcome
• Kelly “Stormy Poet” Williams – Chattanooga National Cemetery Speaks
• Mirabelle Soufer – How Long
• Philip Luckey – Garden Variety Democracy
• Vander – Lacked Intolerance
• Peggy Douglas – Abby Crawford Milton
• Sylvia J. Greene – Eleanor and Mary
• Kweens Crown – Rooted In Zion
• Marcus Lee – Just A Song
• Naomi Setliffe – Nineteenth is a Doorway
• N’nako Kande’ – The Land Remembers
• R. N. Letterman – Garden of Eden: The Watauga Longhunters and the Battle of Kings Mountain
• Kenneth Allen Basham, III – America: A Nation of Mistaken Identity
Thank you to our incredible partners at Rhyme N Chatt, who brought this vision to us and helped shape it into a meaningful public art experience. Special thanks to Project Manager Marsha Mills and community mentors and reviewers Laura Brown, Ian Seaton, and Linda Moss-Mines for their guidance, expertise, and thoughtful participation throughout the process.
Join us on June 28 at Renaissance Park as we celebrate the opening of Democracy Speaks and hear these powerful voices come to life through poetry, community, and conversation.
