Yesterday, students at Alpine Crest Elementary took part in the Apex Fun Run! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🎉

The Apex Fun Run is a 30-minute event that gets kids moving, cheering each other on, and having fun while building teamwork and school spirit. Students also help raise money for their school, with family and friends making pledges based on the number of laps they complete.

And they really got their steps in! Elementary students typically average 26–36 laps during the 30-minute run. But they don’t just run the whole time! To keep things fun, different types of laps are mixed in, including skipping and “swimming” laps, along with girls-only and boys-only laps. 🏊‍♀️🏊‍♂️ It kept everyone moving, laughing, and cheering each other on from start to finish! 💙

Last week, we had the opportunity to participate in Chattanooga 2.0's Adolescent Development Community Learning Series, gaining valuable insights and connecting with partners from across the community! 🌟

During the Public Safety and Youth-Serving Justice Organizations Learning Exchange, we heard from Dr. Adriana Galván with UCLA Center for the Developing Adolescent, who shared insights on brain development, ways our communities and systems can better support young people, and so much more.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to learn, collaborate, and strengthen the ways we support our students.💙

🍎 Teacher Highlight: Mr. Wood | Thrasher Elementary

For 26 years, Mr. Wood has been making an impact in the classroom, including more than two decades at Thrasher Elementary. As a fifth-grade math teacher, he has found a way to make learning active, engaging and something students can look forward to.

Mr. Wood loves finding creative ways to bring math to life. One project his students look forward to is designing and building tiny houses. Students create a blueprint, use what they’ve learned about volume and work together to build their own tiny house models, combining math with hands-on learning and STEM.

But for Mr. Wood, teaching is about much more than academics. It’s about getting to know his students and creating a classroom where they feel comfortable being themselves. From talking sports to trading Pokémon cards and playing music, he looks for those small moments that help build relationships and make his classroom feel like a place where students belong.

He also loves helping students discover that math doesn’t have to be intimidating. Seeing a student go from believing they “hate math” to feeling confident in what they can do is one of the most rewarding parts of his job.

After more than two decades at Thrasher, Mr. Wood says his students continue to keep him young, keep him learning and keep him coming back ready to make a difference.

And if his students leave his classroom smiling, a little more confident and ready for what comes next, Mr. Wood considers that a good day.

Middle school is a big step! For sixth graders, that transition can shape so much more than just their first year.

Across Hamilton County Schools, educators are working intentionally to help students feel supported and confident as they adjust to new routines, new expectations, and a new school environment.

🎥 Take a look at how HCS is helping make the transition to sixth grade a little easier for students.

HCS showed up in true Dolly style! ✨

Schools across Hamilton County celebrated the one and only Dolly Parton with pink, shimmer, cowboy hats, Dolly shirts, and plenty of creativity. 💗🤠

It was a fun way for students and staff to celebrate a Tennessee icon whose music, generosity and love of learning have made an impact on so many.

Classrooms and hallways across HCS added extra sparkle to the day! ✨
