Murray County Developmental Center

Murray County Developmental Center Program designed to assist developmentally disabled adults achieve new skills, enhance existing skills as well as make community connections.

Murray County Developmental Center was founded by families and citizens of Murray County in 1973. Originally the Center provided services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. The first building was a five room house located on Third Avenue next to the old hospital. As the number of clients grew, it became apparent there was a need for expanded services and a larger building. Th

e Murray County Association began fundraising for a larger facility, and in August of 1975 the Center moved to its present location on Chestnut St. At this time the Center incorporated under a separate Board of Directors from the Murray County Association. In the mid 80's, children with developmental disabilities were transitioned into public school services. The Center began to change direction of its programs and began supporting people in integrated community settings. Adults began receiving training and support not only at the Center, but at regular community job sites, volunteer sites, and in their homes. We were the first agency in Murray County to receive United Way funding. The Center has been accredited by CARF since 1998.

One of our amazing participants spent the morning volunteering at the Humane Society of NWGA. From brisk walks to well-deserved playtime, it was pure joy for both the pups and our volunteer.
At MCDC, community involvement isn’t just something we talk about- it’s a core part of who we are. By volunteering locally, our participants build meaningful connections, develop new skills, and actively contribute to the community we all share. 🙌
A huge thank you to the Humane Society for welcoming us and providing such a wonderful opportunity to give back!
