Thank you, Sparky, for a great fire prevention lesson! This year the theme for Fire Prevention Week is "Charge into Fire Safety" and teaches the importance of safe charging for devices with lithium-ion batteries. The experiment below is a great visual for kids who most likely use items with lithium-ion batteries on a daily basis. Safe charging matters!

We’re excited to share a major improvement at Chatham Fire — our new MagneGrip vehicle exhaust removal system is now in place!

This project was made possible through a grant, allowing us to make a significant investment in the health and safety of the men and women who serve our community.

Why is this so important?

Every time a fire apparatus starts inside the station, diesel exhaust can release toxic gases and fine particulate matter into the air. Firefighters spend countless hours in and around the station, making reducing exposure to these contaminants an important part of our ongoing efforts to prevent occupational cancer.

Our new MagneGrip exhaust removal system captures exhaust directly at the vehicle’s tailpipe and removes it from the station before it can spread throughout the apparatus bay and surrounding areas. The magnetic connection attaches to the exhaust pipe while the apparatus is running and automatically releases as the vehicle leaves the bay.

This is more than a new piece of equipment — it’s an investment in our firefighters and their future.

Cancer prevention starts with reducing exposure, and this system is another important step toward creating a cleaner, healthier firehouse for our crews.

We are incredibly grateful for the grant funding that made this project possible and for everyone who helped bring it to our station.

Today, your Chatham Fire will join Riverton Fire and other area agencies as we come together to honor the life and service of Retired Chief Dominic Vespa during his Final Farewell Ride.

We are honored to stand alongside our brothers and sisters in the fire service as we pay tribute to a dedicated firefighter, leader, mentor, and friend who gave more than 60 years of service to his community.

Today, we remember his service, his leadership, and the lasting impact he made on the fire service and those who had the privilege of knowing him.
