Village of Chatham Police Department Deploys New Mobile Vehicle Barriers to Strengthen Public Safety
CHATHAM, NY — The Village of Chatham Police Department has acquired two new mobile Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) barrier trailers from Meridian Rapid Defense Group, further enhancing the village’s capability to secure public spaces and protect attendees at large community events.
The Archer 1200 Barriers were purchased through a grant awarded by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). The grant application was submitted by Police Chief Joe Alessi, reflecting the department’s proactive approach to securing advanced public safety infrastructure without placing additional financial strain on taxpayers.
This week, members of the Chatham Police Department, Chatham Fire Department, Department of Public Works, and village staff participated in hands-on training focused on the proper setup and deployment of the barriers and trailers.
The Archer 1200 system, developed by Meridian Rapid Defense Group, is a mobile, modular solution designed to stop or deflect hostile vehicle threats. Unlike permanent barriers, these units are fully portable, require no anchoring, and can be deployed quickly—making them ideal for dynamic event environments such as street fairs, parades, and festivals.
“These barriers are a vital tool for protecting both pedestrians and first responders during large-scale events,” said Chatham Police Chief Joe Alessi. “Their ease of deployment and proven performance give us added flexibility and peace of mind as we plan for community safety.”
In addition to local use, the Village of Chatham will make the barriers available to assist other municipalities or agencies within Columbia County and the surrounding region for special events requiring enhanced security. This cooperative approach reflects a broader commitment to regional public safety and resource sharing.
The equipment, manufactured by Meridian Rapid Defense Group, is used globally at high-profile events and meets stringent U.S. and international safety standards.
The Village of Chatham plans to deploy the barriers at upcoming community events and encourages neighboring agencies to coordinate for potential shared use.
