The Chatham Police Department, in partnership with the Autism Hero Project, is proud to announce participation in the Blue Envelope Program, a voluntary initiative designed to promote better communication and safer interactions between law enforcement and community members.

The Blue Envelope Program was created for individuals who may experience communication challenges during stressful situations, including traffic stops or other encounters with law enforcement. This may include individuals with autism or those with other communication differences.

Community members receive a blue envelope that serves as a visual cue to law enforcement that additional time, simplified instructions, or adjusted communication may be helpful during the interaction.

The envelope is used to hold important documents such as a driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, along with optional information voluntarily provided by the individual or caregiver. This information may include communication preferences or other notes that assist first responders in understanding how best to communicate.

The goal of the Blue Envelope Program is to reduce misunderstandings, lower anxiety during high-stress situations, and promote safer outcomes for both residents and first responders. By providing clear information at the start of an interaction, officers are better equipped to recognize communication differences that might otherwise be misinterpreted.

Blue envelopes are available for pickup in person at the Chatham Police Department. No registration, identification or documentation is required to obtain them.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

This week, we will be paying tribute to police officers around the country who have made the ultimate sacrifice. πŸŒΉπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

We will never forget the sacrifices they made and the great love they showed to their communities in giving their own lives up for them…

The book of John, Chapter 15, Verse 13 tells us this: "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s own life for their friends." Each and every single one of them exemplified this. ❀️
