A clipper system will bring accumulating snow to southern New England from tonight into Saturday morning. The highest confidence for impactful snowfall is across central and western Connecticut and western Massachusetts, where 3–5 inches are expected with localized totals up to 6-8 inches. Rhode Island and central to eastern Massachusetts will see lighter snowfall, generally 2-4 inches. Winter weather headlines are in effect in portions of the region, and slick travel is possible Friday night into early Saturday. Forecast confidence is moderate due to a narrow snowfall gradient, where small changes in storm track could result in notable differences in snow totals. Looking ahead, another system may bring a threat of freezing rain late Sunday night into early Monday, mainly across interior southern New England.

❄️ Winter Weather Update for Southern New England ❄️

A clipper system will move across the region Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing accumulating snow to parts of southern New England.

Where the most snow is expected:
Central and western Connecticut and western Massachusetts have the greatest confidence for impactful snowfall, with 2–4 inches expected and localized totals up to 5 inches.

Elsewhere:
Rhode Island and central to eastern Massachusetts will see lighter snowfall, generally a coating up to 2 inches.

⚠️ Winter weather headlines are in effect across portions of central and western Connecticut and western Massachusetts. Please be prepared for slick roads and reduced visibility, especially Friday night into early Saturday.

Timing:
Snow develops from west to east Friday evening, continues overnight, and tapers off early Saturday morning.

🔎 Forecast confidence is moderate.
A narrow snowfall gradient means small shifts in the storm track could result in noticeable differences in snow totals over short distances. Continue to check for updates as the event approaches.

➡️ Looking ahead:
Another system may bring a chance of freezing rain late Sunday night into early Monday, mainly across interior southern New England. While details are still coming into focus, we want to raise awareness as the holiday weekend wraps up.

Attention to All Commercial Shellfish Fishers and Wholesale Dealers: DMF Will No Longer Issue Shellfish Transaction Cards in 2026

Beginning in the 2026 commercial permit year, DMF will no longer issue shellfish transaction cards to commercial shellfish permit holders. Shellfish transaction cards are those hard plastic embossed cards that were issued to commercial shellfish permit holders to be swiped by the wholesale dealer at the point of all primary shellfish transactions to create a carbon copy transaction slip for traceability purposes.

The technology used to create and print these cards is outdated, and as such, DMF can no longer readily produce and issue these cards. DMF is currently working with our partners at the Department of Public Health to transition to a modern solution. However, this transition will take time and will likely not be available for implementation until 2027. Therefore, for 2026, DMF will only require that commercial shellfish fishers present their commercial shellfish permit (paper or electronic copy) and a valid state issued ID (to authenticate) to their wholesale dealer at the point of primary transaction.

For dealers, the current transaction tracking system will suffice in the interim to meet required needs for records. Dealers must take care to ensure that transaction records exist that capture the same information as the transaction slip (electronic records acceptable) and are organized to be easily called up and provided as needed for inspectors and/or to facilitate product recalls, etc.

As additional information becomes available, DMF will provide commercial shellfish fishers and wholesale dealers with information regarding how the Commonwealth intends to replace the shellfish transaction card moving forward.

One fish, two fish, scup fish, bluefish! Did you know that fish flavors range from mild and sweet - like flounder, black sea bass, and sea robin, to the oily and bold flavors of fish, like bluefish and mackerel.

Often, species share similar flavors and textures, making it easier to practice flexible consumption. If a species you are looking for is not in season, you can try another species with comparable features.
