The National Weather Service issued a TORNADO WATCH for the Chatham Borough area until [7:00pm]. Weather conditions are favorable for a tornado in the Chatham Borough area. If a tornado warning is issued, or a tornado strikes, be prepared to immediately take cover in a storm shelter, or as indicated below:

Immediate Actions if No Storm Shelter:
Go to the Lowest Floor: Move to the lowest level of your home, such as a basement if available. If you don't have a basement, go to the ground floor.

Choose an Interior Room: Select a small, windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest floor, such as a bathroom, closet, or central hallway.

Protect Yourself: Get under a sturdy piece of furniture like a heavy table or desk. Use mattresses, blankets, or pillows to cover yourself and shield from debris. Wearing a helmet or other head protection can be beneficial.

Stay Away from Windows and Doors: These areas are most vulnerable to flying debris and glass breakage.

Crouch Low and Cover Your Head: Crouch as low as possible to the floor, facing down, and cover your head with your hands and arms to protect against falling debris.

For Those Without a Basement
Bathtub Safety: If you have a bathtub, lie in it and cover yourself with a mattress or heavy blankets. The bathtub can provide some protection against flying debris.

Under Heavy Furniture: If a bathtub is not available, get under a sturdy piece of furniture like a heavy table or desk. Use cushions or pillows to protect yourself.

In Mobile Homes or Vehicles: If you are in a mobile home or vehicle, leave immediately and move to the nearest sturdy building. If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in a low-lying area like a ditch, covering your head with your hands and arms. Be aware of potential flooding in such areas.

Additional Tips
Emergency Kit: Keep an emergency kit with essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlights, batteries, and a weather radio in your designated safe area.

Stay Informed: Keep a battery-powered weather radio or mobile device handy to receive updates and instructions from local authorities.

Practice Your Plan: Conduct regular tornado drills with your family so everyone knows where to go and what to do in case of an emergency.

Thank you and stay safe!
