The Rural Business Growth Playbook

Growing a business in rural Minnesota takes more than a good idea. It takes the right help at the right moment. Funding when you need it. A connection you didn't know existed. A tool that turns a vague plan into a real one. The problem isn't that the resources aren't out there. They are. Grants, programs, funding, organizations built to help you scale. The problem is that nobody hands you a map. This workshop is the map.

You'll walk through the small business ecosystem across Northern Minnesota and meet the people and programs already positioned to help. Business owners will learn how to spot the support they need and connect with the right provider before a problem becomes a crisis. City staff, EDA teams, and community leaders will learn how to get the businesses in their towns plugged into resources they're leaving on the table.

Then you leave with something to use. The toolkit includes a one-page business planning guide, design thinking tools, a list of resource providers, and more for the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a business moving. Whether you own the business or you're the one trying to help it grow, you'll leave knowing who can help, what they can do, and how to turn those connections into something real.

As CEDA continues to celebrate 40 years of helping small communities do BIG thigs, we recently held a celebration in Mantorville, MN.

To mark this major milestone, U.S. Representative Brad Finstad presented CEDA staff with a U.S. flag flown over the Capital in Washington, D.C. in honor of the work that CEDA has done over 40 years for rural America.

Small towns are the backbone Greater Minnesota, and CEDA's hard work helps to ensure that rural economies continue to grow, innovate, and thrive.

Thank you to the dedicated staff and leaders who have spent the last 40 years making a real difference for our local businesses and communities. Here's to the next 40!

Blue Earth REV hosted the first MBFFA Food & Ag Tour on August 5, bringing together local business owners, producers, resource partners, and community leaders for an afternoon focused on the food and agriculture industry across their region.

The tour included stops at Blue Earth Stockyards, The Country Butcher Shop in Easton, and St. Germaine Simmentals near Winnebago, where participants heard directly from each business and got a closer look at their operations.

The day wrapped up at MTS Farms & Events with dinner and speakers focused on agriculture, education, entrepreneurship, and economic development in rural communities.

More than just a tour, the event created an opportunity to build connections between businesses, community leaders, and regional resources while highlighting the important role food and agriculture plays in creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and strengthening rural economies.

The tour was made possible through the MBFFA Grant, a partnership between Blue Earth REV, GreenSeam, and Minnesota State University, Mankato.
