About 30% of Carver County’s 48,000 homes were built before 1980. As these homes are remodeled or torn down, they create a huge amount of leftover building materials.

To keep usable items out of the landfill, Carver County has launched a Building Material Reuse Program in partnership with Home Again Furnishings and Nordic Waste , with support from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Here’s how you can get involved:

The ReClaim-It Store – Located inside Home Again Furnishings in Waconia. Shop or donate salvaged building materials and watch for free material swaps held four times a year.

Drop-Off Site in Norwood Young America – In partnership with Nordic Waste. Residents can drop off or pick up usable building materials for free. More sites are planned for 2026!

Deconstruction & Reuse Grants – Planning a remodel? You may qualify for a micro-grant to help carefully remove materials (deconstruction) or purchase reclaimed items.

May 29 is Learn About Composting Day!

Did you know that nearly one-third of what we throw away is organic material? Instead of taking up space in a landfill, food scraps and other compostable materials can be turned into nutrient-rich compost that supports gardens, landscaping, and healthy soils. Composting is a simple way to reduce waste and put valuable resources to better use.

If you've ever wondered what can be composted, how to get started, or whether composting is right for your household, today is the perfect day to learn more.

To help residents get started, Carver County is currently offering free composting starter kits to Carver County residents. Each kit includes a kitchen pail, compostable bags, and educational materials. Kits are available while supplies last and are limited to one per household.

Starter kits can be picked up at the Carver County Environmental Center in Chaska or Dakota Prairie Composting in Shakopee.

Vapes don’t belong in the trash or recycling bin.

Used and disposable v**es contain a not-so-great combination of lithium batteries, ni****ne residue, and other toxic materials that can start fires, leak harmful chemicals, and endanger workers.

When purchasing v**es, look for models that have removable cartridges so that v**e liquid and electronics can both be managed correctly.

You can drop off v**es, e-cigarettes, and v**e pens free of charge at the Carver County Environmental Center during regular hours.

https://www.carvercountymn.gov/departments/public-services/environmental-services/environmental-center

When bringing them in:
-Bring them separately (not mixed with other recyclables or household hazardous waste)
-Notify staff when you arrive so they can handle them safely

Proper disposal keeps hazardous materials out of the waste stream and helps protect our workers, our community, and our environment.

Another Fix-it Clinic is coming up Saturday, May 30, from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Hosted by A Better Society

At these clinics, residents have the opportunity to sit down with a volunteer fixer to talk through their item and work together toward a repair. Even if something can’t be fixed, volunteers help diagnose the issue and provide part numbers, alternative repair options, or guidance on recycling and proper disposal.

We’re always looking to grow our network of fixers, especially those with skills in sewing and small appliance repair. If you or someone you know might be interested in helping out, let us know!

Did you know that much of the fishing tackle currently available on the market is made from lead? Lead is a toxic metal that can be lethal in small amounts to common loons and other wildlife, including trumpeter swans and bald eagles. The common loon is an integral part of our ecosystems, and across the United States, lead poisoning is a leading cause of death for loons.

As you get ready for fishing opener, consider making the switch to lead-free tackle. Small changes can help protect loons and other wildlife that share Minnesota’s lakes.

Check out the Get The Lead Out Minnesota lead-free manufacturer page for an extensive list of lead-free tackle manufacturers. The GTLO team also encourages anglers and other concerned citizens to ask their local bait and tackle shops to carry more lead-free options.
