We are grateful for the visionaries, Donald West and then Harry Click, who saw value to keep this factory to share with the generations.

Southside Roller Mill in Chase City (Mecklenburg County) has been a downtown landmark for a century producing and selling “Wide-Awake” flour, “Hoe-Cake” self-rising cornmeal, and feed grain until the 1980s. Today, though unused, the mill retains all of its interior milling equipment including millstones, chutes, sifters, presses, and engines making it a rare surviving example of its time. An August 2013 article describes the new owners hopes for restoring the building into a museum and community center, but funding is often a difficulty for such ambitious plans.
