Getting ready to enjoy the water this summer? Before you cast off, make sure your vessel is equipped with the mandatory safety gear!

Here is your quick pre-launch checklist:

Life Jackets (PFDs): You need one Coast Guard-approved wearable PFD for every person on board. (Note: Kids under 12, personal watercraft users, waterskiers, and paddlers from Sept 15–May 15 MUST wear them at all times!)

Throwable Flotation Device: Required if your boat is 16 feet or longer.

Fire Extinguishers: Mandatory for motorboats.

Sound & Visual Signals: A horn or whistle, plus visual distress signals (like flares) to call for help in an emergency.

Navigation Lights: Required if you are operating between sunset and sunrise, or during low visibility.

The Basics: All motorboats (except PWCs) must carry an anchor, a manual bailer, and a line. If your boat is under 16 feet, you also need a paddle or an oar!

Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy the waves! 🌊☀️ For the full breakdown of state regulations and to check if you need a Boating Safety Certificate, visit the Mass.gov Environmental Police page.
