One of the most frustrating aspects of living with chronic pain is when it stops you from doing what you love most. Sharon was experiencing this frustration when her leg pain began to worsen.

Sharon loves living in her rural home, where she has space to breathe and think. Her daily routine includes walks on her property, feeding birds, deer, and wildlife. It inspires her in her art and gardening, which she shares with members at JABA’s Community Center.

Her friendships there blossomed through shared trips and activities like exercise, but her worsening pain began to hold her back. She now had difficulty doing the things she loved most, and she shared this concern with her Aging Services Coordinator (ASC).

Sharon told them about the swelling and pain that limited her movement, sleep quality, increased her pain, and posture difficulties. The ASC was able to secure a heating pad and compression stockings for her, and Sharon began using them eagerly. Soon, she began to notice a decrease in her pain and an increase in her activity levels.

She was able to get back to her love for nature, movement, and people. It astounded Sharon that such a simple resource could improve her quality of life so much, and pain isn’t holding her back anymore.

JABA empowers individuals to understand difficulties they experience and find solutions to improve their quality of life. Get back to doing what you love: https://www.jabacares.org/senior-helpline

In today’s world, people of different ages often live, work, and spend time separately. Because of this, intentional relationships between generations are more important than ever. In the past, it was common for several generations of a family to live in the same home. Grandparents often helped care for children and manage the household while parents worked. These homes created natural opportunities for people of different generations to learn from and support one another. Today, most families live in smaller households apart from one another. As a result, many people miss out on the valuable connections that were once built into home life.

Staying independent is why many adults 60+ and people with disabilities connect with an Aging Services Coordinator at JABA. Together, they establish goals and work toward them. Individuals are empowered to stay in their homes and community, remaining as active and self-sufficient as possible. Through benefits applications, programs that support daily living, and help with immediate needs, people can continue living how and where they want.
