How about a congratulations to these young Fairview Aggies!? It looks like Fairview High School Coach Redding has a pipeline to keep the success going. First, the big boys go 10-0, and now...the FIREPLUGS!
The air was electric on Cullman County championship day, but for the Fairview Fireplugs, things looked bleak. This was a team built on heart, featuring nine 2nd graders and nine 1st graders, who had overcome long odds just to be there. After all, they were coming off a tough 3-5 season last year. Yet, here they were, in the county final.
Their opponent was the defending county champions, the Hanceville Bulldogs—the only team that had beaten the Fireplugs during the regular season. As the halftime horn sounded, the scoreboard confirmed the challenge: the Fireplugs were down 12-0.
But this team had a different fire this season. They came out in the second half and mounted a historic charge, scoring 20 unanswered points. The pivotal moment came when Stryker Millwood executed a magnificent scoop and score fumble recovery, which jolted the team ahead on the scoreboard.
The defense, which had kept them in the game, then rose to the occasion for a crucial 4 and out defensive stand, successfully holding the Bulldogs at 12 points and protecting their slim lead. This defensive brilliance set the stage for the offense to deliver the knockout blow: a punishing 70-yard touchdown drive that sealed the victory.
The Fireplugs finished the game having allowed the Hanceville Bulldogs no further points. In that thrilling comeback, they secured the county title, becoming the first Fairview Fireplug team to win the county title in 16 years. Their incredible journey has made the entire community of Fairview so proud of their little champions.
Now, the high school Aggies host Arab in the first round of the playoffs this week to see if they can match the success of their younger counterparts!
