The crew of the West Mecklenburg Fire Department had a busy Tuesday, responding to a wide variety of emergencies throughout the day and into the night.
Earlier in the shift, crews handled several routine but important calls, including medical emergencies, a fire alarm, an outside fire, and a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 485. As the evening progressed, the calls became more serious.
Last night around 10:00 PM, West Mecklenburg and Steele Creek Fire Departments responded to a severe motor vehicle accident on Interstate 485 at West Boulevard involving an ejection. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. The patient sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Just a few hours later, West Mecklenburg and Charlotte Fire Department were dispatched to another serious accident on I-485 at Moores Chapel Road, where a vehicle struck the rear of a tractor-trailer that was parked off the roadway due to a mechanical issue. The impact resulted in a vehicle fire with a person trapped inside.
A police officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrived first on scene and acted quickly, pulling the patient from the burning vehicle before firefighters arrived. The patient was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, with firefighters from West Mecklenburg riding in to continue patient care.
Then this morning, crews also responded to a reported gunshot wound. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts by first responders, the individual tragically succumbed to their injuries.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable and often challenging situations first responders face every day. They also highlight the importance of teamwork among fire departments, law enforcement, and EMS partners who work together to protect and serve our community.
Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the individuals and families affected by these incidents.
