Heads up Cleveland County - we could see some strong to severe thunderstorms move through our area Saturday afternoon into the evening. ⛈️

🌦️ A few scattered showers and storms are possible today, but the bigger weather concern arrives Saturday.

A cold front will move through Saturday afternoon and evening, creating an environment favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms. ⛈️

The main threat will be damaging wind gusts, although large hail up to around 1” in diameter cannot be ruled out.

🫜 ICYMI: Our August Feature Farmer Friday spotlight was Old North Farm in Polkville! On just one acre, Jamie Swofford, Keia Mastrianni, and a small team grow seasonal vegetables with consideration, care, and love.

They farm on Jamie's third-generation land, working their produce by hand with organic practices, no synthetic fertilizers or chemicals, and no large equipment, just nutrient-dense produce across each season.

They are also home to Broad River Community Market, a nonprofit that grows and distributes free produce to local families.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for International Overdose Awareness Day at the Totally Free Clothes Store in Shelby — we're grateful for such a strong turnout. 💜

Our team was proud to stand alongside local organizations to share community resources and honor those we've lost to overdose. Every life matters, and support is available for anyone still on their own recovery journey.

🔷 Resources available to all residents:

• Free Narcan is available at the Health Department pharmacy (200 S Post Rd, Shelby) — a simple way to help save a life.
• Free medicine lock boxes are available at the Health Department front desk, free for anyone who needs one.
• Recovery Connect Cleveland County connects residents to local substance use treatment and recovery services, plus support for essential needs like housing, food, employment, transportation, and healthcare.
• A Cleveland County Substance Use and Mental Health Resources Guide is available online.

Cleveland County Government Offices will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.

This includes all recycling centers and landfills, which will reopen with normal operating hours on Tuesday, September 8.

Following the recent press release from NC DHHS regarding confirmed rabies cases, we want to ensure that anyone who believes they may have been exposed receives appropriate guidance.

At this time, we are not aware of any events involving the Farm Adventures mobile petting zoo that were held within Cleveland County. However, we recognize that many Cleveland County residents travel and attend events outside of the county and may have attended an event where a potential exposure occurred.

If you attended an event with the Farm Adventures mobile petting zoo between July 28 and August 27, 2026, and believe you may have had contact with a rabies-infected animal, please contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5100.

Our team can provide additional information and guidance regarding potential exposure and appropriate next steps. Please do not delay in reaching out if you believe you may have been exposed.
