The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) Education Department works closely with the public schools on the Flathead Reservation to maintain an accurate Johnson O’Malley (JOM) student list. What is JOM? The Johnson-O'Malley (JOM) Program is a federally authorized initiative that provides educational assistance and supplemental services to eligible American Indian and Alaska Native students. JOM funds go directly to CSKT, not the schools. Each school district community has an Indian Education Committee (IEC) consisting of parents/guardians who have children in the school district, who are JOM eligible. This committee of parents hold the voting rights on how the JOM monies are spent within the school district, guided by the annual Needs Assessment Survey priorities and CSKT Education Department. Who is eligible? JOM eligible students are age 3 through grade 12 and are either (1) an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe, or (2) have a combined Indian blood degree from federally recognized tribes of ¼ or more, or (3) are a descendant of a least one parent or grandparent (living or deceased) who is a member of a federally recognized tribe. To be verified, proper documentation must be on file with the CSKT Education Department. What are the benefits of being JOM Verified? JOM verified students are provided a variety of supplemental educational services via JOM funds. JOM programs offered to American Indian and Alaska Native students vary and may include such programs as culture, language, academic achievement incentives and dropout prevention. If you DO NOT want your child’s school and the CSKT Education Department to mutually share JOM information, please contact us by the 1 st Friday of September and we will remove your child from the

CSKT Education’s JOM list.

If the sharing of the JOM list is acceptable, you do not need to do anything further.

With the additional rainfall we have received today, we are going to have to cancel field day for this year. It is a huge let down for our students, but it's not realistic to believe the track will be dry enough on Wednesday to make it happen. Thank you for your understanding.

Mother Nature has decided that Monday is not a good day for elementary field day. We will try to make it happen on Wednesday if the field is dry enough and the rain is done.

Congratulations Mrs. Redfox and her 5th grade class on outstanding performance of Scarface.

📣 VIKING ROLL CALL 📣

Say hello to Mr. Steve Young!

Mr. Young is finishing his second year at Charlo Schools teaching Junior High English and PE, and we’re so glad he’s here. As a proud Charlo graduate from the Class of 1983, coming back to teach here has been a special full-circle moment for him.

After graduating from Concordia Teachers College in Nebraska, Mr. Young taught and coached in Nebraska before spending a few years teaching 6th grade in Texas. But the valley always felt like home, and eventually he made his way back to Charlo — a place he says he has always loved for its people, community, and memories.

A few fun things about Mr. Young:
💜 Favorite color: Purple
🍬 Favorite snack: Licorice
🔥 Favorite hobbies: Boating, reading, relaxing by a fire pit, and cheering on the Charlo Vikings!

When asked what inspired him to become a teacher, he shared that his parents, Lowell and Josephine Young, were a big influence — and that teaching runs in the family.

Mr. Young says one of his favorite things about Charlo Schools is “the students, the staff, and a little nostalgia.”

And his childhood stories are pretty unforgettable! Growing up just outside of town, his family raised oriental pheasants, milked cows, and had horses and pigs. He and his brother even timed each other to see who could churn butter the fastest! They also had a pet monkey named Chili and an owl named Chief. Later on, he even raised a bobcat named Dakota.

One thing you’ll quickly learn about Mr. Young is his sense of humor. If a student gets hurt, there’s a good chance they’ll hear:
“Don’t worry, it won’t hurt anymore when the pain goes away.” 😄

We’re lucky to have Mr. Young back home at Charlo!
