Gardens for Charlestown

Gardens for Charlestown One of Boston’s oldest community gardens, maintained by its 60+ members, supported by the generosity of our friends and neighbors, and open to the public.

Mission
The Gardens for Charlestown is educational and charitable, focusing on improving lives of people in Charlestown and producing something of value from the land itself. It was incorporated in 1980 as charitable 501(c)3 non-profit, whose purpose is to promote community pride, gardening, and green space in Charlestown. It is a unique green space that is communally cultivated and cared for, con

sisting of individually worked plots and communally-tended gardens that contribute to the neighborhood. Its unique characteristics of accessibility to neighbors and the public at large make it a well-maintained park-like green space for walks and enjoying nature. In recognition of the importance of community stewardship, the Garden runs several events throughout the year.

SPRING! Crocuses belong to the Iridaceae (Iris) family, with over 90 species found across Europe, North Africa, and Asia. These plants are geophytes, meaning they grow from underground corms, similar to bulbs, that store nutrients to survive harsh winters. #02129

Asters are an essential late-season food source for our pollinators. As an aside, if you have visited the Gardens recently, you may have noticed some changes to our apiaries. Upon inspection one of our hives was found to be queenless. In order to increase the chances of our hives surviving the winter, we have tried combined a smaller hive with a larger one. We’ll see if these two communities can come together Garden Tags
