Starting now, Charlestown Police Department officers can take a two-week sabbatical after five years of service in a newly approved Rejuvenation Program, proposed by Police Chief Eric Kruse to promote officer wellness.
When sabbatical time comes, the requirements are simple. No work-related phone calls, messages or emails. No call-outs. No off-duty employment related to police-like authority. And, park the police vehicle.
โ€œThis program provides proactive mental health support for our officers,โ€ said Kruse. โ€œItโ€™s designed to reduce burn out, improve morale, and strengthen family and friend relationships outside the workplace. We feel this will support and improve long-term mental and career health. The other desirable is to enhance overall job performance upon return.โ€
The program is believed to be one of the first in the state of Indiana. Similar programs have shown success in Minnesota.

Officer Graci Moore has officially graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy!

From January to April, she completed over 600 hours of training and education. This is a big accomplishment and shows her hard work and dedication. Officer Moore is from Charlestown where she grew up and graduated from the Charlestown High School before going to college.

Officer Moore now joins the thousands of law enforcement officers across the state. We are proud to have her back home, ready to serve the Charlestown community.

Welcome back, Officer Moore!

Message from the Chief,

Our Officers are constantly working hard 24 hours a day to keep you safe. This is the last 24 hours of CHPD activity. During this period there were two officers working day shift and two working night shift. Note: This doesn't reflect all the hard work that our Detectives, SRO's, and Administration are doing during this time, but this is what our patrol officers have been doing. This also doesn't reflect all of the work the patrol officers are putting behind the scenes with reports, trainings, and other responsibilities that they have.

CHPD added the 19th full time officer position today with the swearing of the third female full time officer on the current staff; an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certified lateral from Indiana State Conservation and originally from Charlestown, Claire Jenkins. Officer Jenkins brings three years of law enforcement experience to CHPD, including being named Indiana Conservation Officer of the Year for District 8 in 2025. Charlestown Mayor Treva Hodges sworn in Officer Jenkins promptly after the City of Charlestown, Indiana Board of Public Works approval. Officer Jenkins is shown with Mayor Hodges and Chief Kruse just after the oath of office was completed, and then with some of her family afterward outside of City Hall. Congratulations to Officer Jenkins and welcome to CHPD!!

PSA: Zero Tolerance for Impaired Driving in Charlestown
The City of Charlestown does not tolerate impaired driving. If you come into our community and choose to drive under the influence, especially in a way that puts our residents, children, and families in danger; our officers will take action and make an arrest when probable cause exists.

On Friday, April 10, 2026, it is alleged that Wayne Schultz drove from Seymour to Charlestown and operated his vehicle off-road through Greenway Park while children and families were present. He then drove across a basketball court that was occupied by kids playing, before attempting to drive up a hill.

Thanks to alert Charlestown residents who called 911, officers were able to locate the vehicle in the parking lot of Greenway Park. After an investigation, officers established probable cause that the driver was operating while intoxicated. The suspect was taken into custody after resisting officers. During the investigation Mr. Schultz was uncooperative, resistive, and made multiple threats towards law enforcement and battered a Charlestown Officer.
Mr. Schultz was booked into the Clark County Jail on preliminary charges that evening.

On April 15th, 2026, Mr. Shultz had his preliminary hearing and was officially charged with the following statute violations:

โ€ข Operating While Intoxicated C Misdemeanor

The Charlestown Police Department has a zero-tolerance stance on impaired driving, especially when actions put our parks, families, and children at risk.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

We thank our community for speaking up and helping keep Charlestown safe. Thank you to our officers who go above and beyond to keep Charlestown safe. The work you do everyday is appreciated!
