Substance use during hospitalization is more common than many realize, and how healthcare teams respond matters enormously. Punitive approaches increase stigma, erode trust, and often lead to early discharge against medical advice. There's a better way.

This episode explores evidence-based, patient-centered strategies for addressing in-hospital substance use, including:

✅ Proactive communication frameworks
✅ Collaborative approaches that support both patients and care teams
✅ Practices that improve safety

If you work in healthcare or addiction medicine, this one is essential listening.

Some of the most important lessons in substance use care don't come from a classroom. AMERSA invites the clinicians, researchers, educators, social workers, pharmacists, nurses, peer specialists, and advocates across this field to reflect on the moments that shaped their practice: what has a client or patient taught you that no training ever could?

Lived and living experience strengthens care and builds trust between clients and providers. Those insights deserve a place in the conversation.
