🚒 Big Day for Charlestown Volunteer Fire Company! 🚒

We are excited to announce that our new engine has officially been delivered today! This is a proud moment for our department and our community, and we couldn’t be more excited to begin putting this new piece of apparatus into service.

A project like this takes a tremendous amount of planning, time, and dedication. We would like to recognize and thank the members of the Engine Committee, led by Chairman Jason Barrow, who worked tirelessly throughout this process to make sure every detail was carefully thought out and that this engine would best serve our firefighters and the citizens we protect.

Engine Committee Members:
• Jason Barrow – Chairman
• Danny Miller
• Alex Galien
• Kamryn Heroux
• Gary Bott
• Ronnie Daniels
• Jordan Heverin

Your hard work, commitment, and attention to detail helped make this project a reality.

We are incredibly proud of this new engine and the thoughtful planning that went into designing it. It represents the continued dedication of our members to provide the best equipment possible for our firefighters and the community we serve.

Stay tuned for more photos and updates as we begin training and preparing the new engine for service.

Charlestown Volunteer Fire Company – ISO Rating Information

The Charlestown Volunteer Fire Company currently maintains an ISO Class 3 Public Protection Classification rating. ISO ratings range from 1 to 10, with Class 1 being the highest level of fire protection and Class 10 being the lowest. A Class 3 rating places Charlestown among the higher-rated fire protection classifications, which can play an important role in helping protect property owners through potential insurance savings.

ISO evaluates three primary components: emergency communications, water supply, and fire department operations. The municipal water system and hydrant infrastructure within the Town of Charlestown are an important part of that overall evaluation and contribute to the water supply portion of the ISO score.

The largest portion of the ISO rating, however, is based on the operational readiness of your volunteer fire department. This includes:

• Apparatus and equipment
• Training hours and certifications
• Pre-incident planning
• Record keeping and documentation
• Response capabilities and staffing levels

Maintaining a Class 3 rating requires consistent investment in apparatus, ongoing equipment maintenance, and significant training commitment from our volunteer members.

To become a certified firefighter in Maryland requires a minimum of 135 hours of initial training. This does not include additional certifications and continuing education required as members advance through the department in driver/operator, officer development, and specialized rescue disciplines. Our members dedicate hundreds of hours each year to maintain readiness.

At this time, one of the primary factors that could improve our ISO rating further would be increased guaranteed staffing. As a volunteer organization, that requires a high level of dedication from our current members and support from community members who are willing and able to step forward and serve.

We remain committed to providing professional, well-trained fire protection services to the Town of Charlestown and surrounding communities, and we appreciate the continued cooperation between infrastructure, communications, and operational readiness that helps maintain our current ISO classification.

If any residents are interested in becoming part of the team, we welcome you to contact us to learn more about how you can contribute.

This week the members on the engine committee traveled to Pierce Mfg in Appleton Wisconsin to complete the final inspection of our new Pierce Enforcer engine. This engine was ordered back in 2022 and is now finally complete. Santa is coming to Charlestown! On December 16th starting at 530pm Charlestown Fire Company will be giving Santa a ride on a Fire Engine. The Fire Engine will begin its route by heading east along Market Street, traveling through the Historic District. After that, it will proceed north to the Charlestown Manor neighborhood before heading south down Bladen Street towards Holloway Beach and Charlestown Place. Next, the truck will go north on Baltimore Street to Route 7, where it will continue north to reach the Scott Gardens, Cool Springs, and Trinity Woods neighborhoods. Finally, it will head south on Route 7 towards Route 40, wrapping up its journey in Charlestown Crossing. We anticipate the tour to take approximately two hours to complete. The Charlestown administration will be creating a tracking app. Please ensure you are along the route listed to view Santa.
