Housing is one of those issues that touches almost every single one of us.
Today I joined hundreds of nonprofit leaders, elected officials, housing professionals, advocates, and community partners at the Upstate Affordable Housing Summit to talk about what it will take to confront South Carolina’s housing crisis.
And there IS progress worth celebrating. 👏 This year, South Carolina took meaningful steps forward on tenant protections at the state level. Those wins matter.
But there is so much more work ahead.
Housing sits at the intersection of nearly every major challenge we’re facing: wages, economic mobility, development, zoning, infrastructure, homelessness, healthcare, education, and the rising cost of simply existing.
There are plenty of different perspectives in a room like this, and that’s exactly why these conversations matter. We need nonprofit leaders, developers, REALTORS®, elected officials, advocates, lenders, planners, and people with lived experience working together toward solutions.
Because as difficult as housing feels right now, I keep thinking about my kids… In just a few years, they’ll be the ones trying to rent their first apartment or buy their first home. I don’t want us to hand them an even bigger crisis. They deserve the opportunities we were promised!
I’m grateful to be surrounded by so many people who are determined to do something about it. 👏🏡
