🎆 NYE Fireworks Safety Tips 🎆
Even though fireworks are allowed on James Island on New Year’s Eve (until 1 a.m.), they can be dangerous if mishandled. Make sure to follow local regulations and prioritize safety:
🎇 Light fireworks on a flat, clear surface. Make sure the area is free of debris, dry leaves, and nearby structures to prevent fires or tipping.
🖐️ Never hold fireworks in your hand. Place them on the ground, light them at arm’s length, and move away quickly once lit.
🚨 Call 911 immediately if fireworks cause a fire, injury, or get out of control. If flames spread beyond where you can safely put them out, someone is injured, or a firework malfunctions and poses a danger, don’t wait—call 911.
🧤 Wear eye and hand protection. Safety glasses and gloves can help protect against sparks, debris, or unexpected flare-ups.
🧯 Keep a fire extinguisher and water hose within reach. A small, ABC-rated fire extinguisher can quickly put out sparks, grass fires, or trash fires caused by fireworks before they spread. Always use it only if it’s safe, and call 911 if the fire grows or you’re unsure.
❌ Never relight a dud. If a firework doesn’t go off, wait a while, then soak it in water before disposing of it.
🐾 Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks. Loud noises and flashing lights can be extremely stressful for animals, and curious or frightened pets may knock over fireworks, creating a serious safety hazard.
📏 Keep a safe distance. Only adults should handle and light fireworks, and spectators should stand well back
By taking a few simple precautions, we can all enjoy New Year’s Eve celebrations safely. Please celebrate responsibly, look out for your neighbors, and remember that the JIPSD is always here to help if an emergency arises. Wishing everyone a safe and happy New Year! 🎆
