The James Island PSD Fire Department recently created a training officer position again. This position is a Battalion Chief level responsible for overseeing the Department's in-house training, and helps guide our members as they progress through the ranks. We are proud to announce that Captain Brandon Stephens has been promoted to Battalion Chief of Training! He will work closely with the Command staff to help provide the training our members need! Congratulations Chief Stephens!

The crews of the JIPSD FD work hard to provide the absolute best services they can to our community. And sometimes, that community includes our own. In September, the Department responded to a single car motor vehicle accident that also included the driver being found in cardiac arrest. The driver would turn out to be a retired JIPSD Fire Captain.

Our crews along with Charleston County EMS were able to resuscitate the driver, but we do not act in a vacuum. Before our and EMS arrival, Charleston County Sheriff's Officers were already on scene, having witnessed the accident. The two officers pulled the driver from the vehicle and began CPR, while also alerting the Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center who initiated the fire and EMS response. Charleston Fire Department was also dispatched to assist.

Were it not for the actions of ALL those involved, this incident would have had an entirely different, and tragic, outcome.

To honor those responders who responded, the JIPSD Fire Department held an awards ceremony to recognize those responders, who were able to meet Capt. William Green (Ret.) and his wife. It's not every day we get to have such a reunion, which makes this all the more special.

Thank you to ALL the crews, dispatchers, and sheriff's officers who made this a success!

🎆 NYE Fireworks Safety Tips 🎆
Even though fireworks are allowed on James Island on New Year’s Eve (until 1 a.m.), they can be dangerous if mishandled. Make sure to follow local regulations and prioritize safety:

🎇 Light fireworks on a flat, clear surface. Make sure the area is free of debris, dry leaves, and nearby structures to prevent fires or tipping.
🖐️ Never hold fireworks in your hand. Place them on the ground, light them at arm’s length, and move away quickly once lit.
🚨 Call 911 immediately if fireworks cause a fire, injury, or get out of control. If flames spread beyond where you can safely put them out, someone is injured, or a firework malfunctions and poses a danger, don’t wait—call 911.
🧤 Wear eye and hand protection. Safety glasses and gloves can help protect against sparks, debris, or unexpected flare-ups.
🧯 Keep a fire extinguisher and water hose within reach. A small, ABC-rated fire extinguisher can quickly put out sparks, grass fires, or trash fires caused by fireworks before they spread. Always use it only if it’s safe, and call 911 if the fire grows or you’re unsure.
❌ Never relight a dud. If a firework doesn’t go off, wait a while, then soak it in water before disposing of it.
🐾 Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks. Loud noises and flashing lights can be extremely stressful for animals, and curious or frightened pets may knock over fireworks, creating a serious safety hazard.
📏 Keep a safe distance. Only adults should handle and light fireworks, and spectators should stand well back

By taking a few simple precautions, we can all enjoy New Year’s Eve celebrations safely. Please celebrate responsibly, look out for your neighbors, and remember that the JIPSD is always here to help if an emergency arises. Wishing everyone a safe and happy New Year! 🎆
