The James Island Public Service District invites residents to attend a Public Hearing on the proposed FY 2027 Annual Budget and Wastewater Resolution immediately followed by a Regular Commission Meeting.

The proposed budget focuses on maintaining quality services, investing in infrastructure, supporting our employees and first responders, and ensuring future growth pays for itself. This budget also reflects the increased operational efficiency achieved with the consolidation of Solid Waste and Wastewater Operations into the new Environmental Services Department. Residents are encouraged to attend, learn more about the proposed budget, and provide public comment; both written and oral comments will be accepted.

- Cost-of-living increases for JIPSD employees and first responders (2.63%)
- Investments in District infrastructure and facilities.
- Proposed 3-mill property tax increase to offset inflation and rising costs (estimated impact of approximately $4 per month for the average James Island household)
- Three-year phased increase in wastewater capacity fees for new development to ensure existing customers don’t bear the burden of paying for added demands onto the system.

At JIPSD, we’re proud to work alongside dedicated dads who serve our community while providing for and supporting their families. Whether they’re responding to emergencies, maintaining essential services, or working behind the scenes to keep James Island running smoothly, their commitment does not go unnoticed.

Today the JIPSD Fire Department takes time out to remember the sacrifice made by the Charleston 9. We reflect on their loss, and learn from the impact they had on the local area, the progress made in all departments to ensure such a tragedy never happens again. We remember those lost, and hold their loved ones in our hearts and thoughts. 19 years have gone by, and yet sometimes it feels like yesterday.

An entire new generation of firefighters have entered the fire service since that fateful day, including those who hadn't even been born yet. And so we teach our new personnel about that loss. About the lessons learned, and about the growth that came from that tragedy.

Please join us today as we remember them, and celebrate the legacy that came from their tragedy.

Leadership Update: Environmental Services Department

JIPSD is strengthening Environmental Services with a renewed focus on efficiency, teamwork, and operational excellence. Under the leadership of Walter, who now oversees both Solid Waste and Wastewater operations, and Joanne, who is leading the administrative side, the departments are working together more closely than ever before.

With decades of combined experience, Walter and Joanne are focused on building a stronger team environment, improving communication, and ensuring critical issues are addressed immediately. As hurricane season approaches, crews are actively inspecting pump stations, generators, and SCADA systems to ensure everything is operating properly and that any necessary repairs are completed quickly.

Significant progress is already being made. Through proactive planning, strong leadership, and a commitment to continuous improvement, JIPSD is working every day to provide reliable, efficient service to our community. 💧♻️

As Hurricane Preparedness Month approaches, residents of James Island are encouraged to take early, proactive steps to safeguard their families, homes, and businesses ahead of hurricane season.

Local officials emphasize that low-lying areas and proximity to tidal waterways place James Island at increased risk for storm surge and flooding, even during less severe storms.

âś… Understanding your evacuation zone and route is essential; many areas of James Island are among the first to be evacuated when a storm threatens the Charleston region.

âś… Residents should review and update their household emergency plans now, ensuring that all family members know where to go and how to communicate if separated. Plans should also include pets, seniors, and individuals with medical needs.

âś… Preparing an emergency supply kit is another key step. At minimum, households should have enough water, nonperishable food, medications, and essential supplies to last at least three days.

âś… Given the potential for power outages and limited road access on and off the island, extra supplies and backup power options are strongly recommended.

✅ Home and business owners should take time to secure outdoor furniture, trim trees, and inspect roofs and drainage systems. Reviewing insurance policies—particularly flood coverage—is crucial, as standard policies may not cover water damage from storm surge.

District officials and emergency management staff are already preparing for the 2026 hurricane season. Thorough preparation helps keep critical infrastructure running when storms hit.
