Pip the dog starts every morning that he's on the job by pawing at Rick McElhaney's office door.

"If somebody doesn't know any better, they think, 'Oh, he's looking forward to seeing Rick,'" said McElhaney, the deputy director of operations for Metro 911, the dispatch office for Kanawha County. "No, he's looking for me to open my door so he can go in my office and wait by the window for the people that he likes more than me. Then he runs to the door and greets them."

Pip, a certified "super-mutt," is not McElhaney's dog, nor is he anyone else's dog in the Ned Chilton 911 Center in Charleston. Pip is the public safety mascot of Metro 911 — its first ever canine employee.

In observance of Labor Day, our Administrative Office will be closed today, September 7.

Extending a sincere thank you to Serve First Foundation for including Metro 911 in this years annual Operation Ice Cream event hosted at Gomart Park.

We are always honored to be a part of such a heartwarming event, bridging the gap between kids, the general public, and first responders. This event continues to grow, with over 1,600 participants this year from various different states! 🍨💛

Kanawha County Buildings to Close Early Due to Waterline Break

Charleston, W.Va. – August 24, 2026 – Due to a waterline break in the vicinity of the Kanawha County Courthouse, Kanawha County Judicial Building, and Kanawha County Justice and Public Safety Complex, all three buildings will close to the public at 1:00 p.m. today, Monday, August 24, 2026.

The early closure is necessary while repairs to the waterline are completed and water service to the affected buildings is restored.

At this time, it is anticipated that repairs will be completed late this evening and that all three buildings will reopen and resume normal operations on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

Kanawha County will provide additional information if there are any changes to the anticipated reopening schedule.

Kanawha County Commission Declares State of Emergency Following August 16th Flooding

Charleston, WV – Today, the Kanawha County Commission has declared a State of Emergency Countywide following significant flooding and storm damage from August 16th.

This flooding was widespread across Kanawha County, affecting residents from the easternmost parts of the County, to areas around the city of Charleston, and areas in the western part of the County.

The declaration formally recognizes the emergency in Kanawha County and will assist the County in documenting its response and recovery efforts as the full extent of the damage continues to be assessed.

Right now, residents who experienced property damage from the flooding are encouraged to complete the West Virginia Emergency Management Division Weather Damage Survey. Complete the survey online by visiting this link:

The Kanawha County Commission emphasizes that completing the damage survey is not an application for financial assistance. The information collected is being used to assess the overall impact of the flooding. If financial assistance or other disaster assistance becomes available, Kanawha County residents will be notified.
