U.S. Coast Guard Station Coos Bay Welcome to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Coos Bay page. For the official source of information about joining the US Coast Guard, visit gocoastguard.com

In 1878, the first life-saving station, later to become a Coast Guard station, was located at Cape Arago below the lighthouse on a small sandy beach. It was a simple structure manned by a single keeper and sparsely equipped. In case of an emergency, the keeper had to rouse a volunteer crew before any rescue attempt. In 1892, Station Coos Bay was moved from the lighthouse to the North Spit of Coos

Bay and was a fully manned station. The station moved again in 1915. This time it moved from the North Spit to the lee side of Coos Head promontory. A larger station was built consisting of a main administration building and quarters, a boathouse, a workshop and one house reserved for the officer-incharge. The last move for Station Coos Bay was in 1968, to its present location at Charleston Boat Basin.

This weekend, the crew stayed busy assisting numerous vessels across a treacherous Coos Bay Bar. The recent storm produced swells that were consistently 18’ - 20’ with occasional 24’ breaking seas in the main channel. With conditions only expected to get worse, the Station launched 2 MLB’s and assisted 10 vessels across the bar on Friday just before last light. After sunset, the crews assisted their last fishing vessel across the bar while lighting off 10 parachute flares to aid with visibility of incoming waves. After all 11 vessels were safely inside, Coos Bay’s Bar was issued a Captain of the Port Closure and remained closed until first light Sunday morning.
