I was thrilled to be part of this day. It's incredibly empowering to gather with others who share the same passion for nonprofit service and the same desire to be agents of positive change in the communities we love, where we live, work, raise our families, and play.

Thanks to The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation for not just getting these conversations started but for following through with the energy and ideas that result.

The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation hosted a workshop to help nonprofits create narratives to celebrate West Virginia heritage.

I just flooded your feed with our scheduled summer Volunteer Training opportunities. Sorry not sorry. 🤣

This organization is blessed beyond measure to be supported by the most intentional volunteers imaginable. We like to think we create opportunities that are blessings in return.

When we ask our folks what makes Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley their favorite place to make a difference in our community, flexibility is top of the list in nearly every instance.

We work hard to empower our volunteers to have real impact on the lives of our older neighbors - on their schedule, when they're available, when it makes sense for their lives.

Here's the thing: no matter how many volunteers we have, we always need more.

Please join us for one of the upcoming training dates to learn for yourself what we're all about. We can find a place for you in our neighborhood. ❤️

There is no doubt that our active volunteers are this program's greatest ambassadors. Their care and concern for those we serve shines through every day. But what makes their efforts so rewarding is the care and concern they receive in return.

Here's Ann's story.

"I was inspired to start volunteering with Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley because I had a desire to serve and a realization of the need. The training showed me how easy it would be to make a difference.

"I spent several months delivering groceries to 'Grandma Donna,' first talking with her by phone to take her list, then placing the order on line and picking it up, then helping her put things away.

"I was struck by her genuine care for me several times during these once-a-month visits as she would stop me - a chronic go-go-go'er - to say, "Well don't you look pretty today," or "Tell me how your garden is going" in tender ways that truly reminded me of the times I would spend with my grandmother.

"I have (selfishly) gained the warm fuzzy feeling of genuine appreciation from someone for something that was truly so simple for me to do. Knowing that something so easy for me can make such a huge difference for someone else feels like a message to try to do as much as I can."

You can feel that gratification and purpose, too. Watch this space as we prepare to announce our summer Volunteer Training session. Then make plans to join us and see for yourself why volunteering to lend a hand to our older neighbors is the easiest, most flexible, and inherently rewarding opportunity around.

There are so many people putting in the hard work to change the narratives surrounding our communities. It takes all of us, sharing the good stuff, telling the real stories, lifting the veil of negativity that has enshrouded our region for far too long.

Are there problems? Of course.

Are there deep divisions? Absolutely.

Is life here easy? Not always.

But none of that changes the fact that the good here runs deep and the gifts stretch wide.

Telling THAT story will power our ability to fix what’s wrong through hope, inclusion, and engagement.

We live here, work here, play here, raise our families here. If we don’t share our “whys” and our wins and our good, impactful work, who will?

What story will you tell today to help others understand our love for this place?

I can’t thank the team at The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation enough for this incredible opportunity. The kick-off for this year-long experience happened Thursday and Friday, and there are no words, truly. From my inspiring fellow cohort members to the tools, knowledge, and talent we’ve been given access to- I am thrilled to be part of all of it! 💙
