2026-2027 Budget Veto Response

Earlier today, Governor McMaster issued a handful of vetos to the budget conference report passed by the legislature last week. To be blunt, we’re disappointed. Fourteen vetos were nowhere close to what should have been eliminated. The budget still contains millions in funding for drag shows, wasteful climate change research, and payoffs to out-of-state private equity firms. We look forward to an administration that will use the veto pen to protect the taxpayers of our state.

Governor McMaster is right about one thing: South Carolina must pay its bills. Contractors and vendors who have completed authorized work should be paid for the work they performed. Paying our bills should not mean ignoring how those bills became so enormous in the first place. There must be accountability.

The members of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus were the only legislators who stood against the state committing $1.3 billion of taxpayer money to the Scout Motors project. We warned that handing out massive corporate subsidies while allowing the Department of Commerce to micromanage the project was a recipe for exactly what has happened: massive cost overruns and taxpayers being left holding the bag.

The Governor's veto does not address the root of the problem.

Despite the extraordinary overruns, no one at the Department of Commerce—including Secretary Harry M. Lightsey III—has been held accountable. There have been no meaningful consequences for the officials who oversaw this project and allowed costs to balloon.

South Carolina taxpayers deserve accountability for every dollar of their money. They deserve transparency about the decisions that created these overruns, and they deserve consequences when government officials fail in their responsibility to protect the public purse.

Secretary Lightsey should resign.

If he has not resigned by the time the House is recalled to consider veto overrides, members of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus will introduce legislation seeking his removal from his position.

Taxpayers deserve accountability for their hard earned money.

Tariffs are a tax paid for by American consumers. True economic liberty means lower taxes, less tariffs and free trade. Senator Rand Paul is an important voice in the Senate right now. He’s standing on constitutional, limited government principles when many in the party refuse to do so. Stand with Rand.

“If legislators always vote with the President, we have a king.

If legislators always vote with the prevailing wind, we have mob rule.

If legislators always vote with the Constitution, we have a Republic.”

Congressman Thomas Massie

7 page report of the status of 60+ key bills as the SC General Assembly wrapped for 2026. Thanks to Charleston County Republican Party's Gale Matthews for compiling this. All 7 pages at the link. "Sine Die" referred to in the report means end of the legislative session. Sessions are 2 year cycles and we are ending the 2nd of the 2 years. Bills will need to be refiled if the interest is there. Be aware of what legislation you may wish to advocate for.
