SPENCER, W.Va. — Aviation Day at Boggs Field drew steady crowds Friday as visitors enjoyed aircraft displays, and demonstrations.

Civil Air Patrol members were on site throughout the event, speaking with students and aviation enthusiasts as the West Virginia Wing prepares to expand its presence in Spencer. Additional announcements about local CAP activities and opportunities are expected in the coming weeks.

Boggs Field Hosts Aviation Day, Showcases STEM and Civil Air Patrol Programs

SPENCER, W.Va. — Boggs Field welcomed Roane County students Friday for Aviation Day, an event aimed at promoting aviation education and highlighting the airport’s growing role in community outreach.

Students engaged with aviation vendors, aircraft displays and STEM demonstrations under cloudy but cooler skies. Civil Air Patrol personnel provided hands‑on activities, including a flight simulator, STEM exploration kits and fatal‑vision goggle exercises using a small roadster to illustrate impaired‑driving hazards.

Airport officials confirmed they are preparing to stand up a new Civil Air Patrol squadron in Spencer. Boggs Field previously hosted a squadron in the 1970s, and organizers hope to reactivate the unit with its historic charter number.

Aviation Day is part of ongoing efforts to expand youth engagement and strengthen aviation resources in central West Virginia.

Sunday afternoon at the West Virginia State Fair in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Civil Air Patrol is in the house. This is a great opportunity to learn about Civil Air Patrol and how you might join in on the fun.

Civil Air Patrol is the civilian auxiliary of the United States, Air Force and is all volunteer. The three main missions are aerospace education, emergency services, and the cadet program.

Well folks, he’s done it again. At 98 years old, CAP Colonel Bobby Anderson (former Wing commander and current member at Mid Valley Composite Squadron) has taken first place for the fourth straight year at the West Virginia State Fair with his famous fruitcake.

At church this morning, he was smiling from ear to ear — and rightfully so. What an incredible example of joy, dedication, and hometown pride.
