The routines are taking shape. Classrooms are buzzing. Friendships are growing. Hands are going up. Teachers are leaning in. And little by little, a new school year is starting to feel like home!

These are the moments that make up a day at Compass...learning, laughing, asking questions, working together, and growing along the way.

A new school year brings new classrooms, new routines and new opportunities to find your place. 💙

And for our families, that sense of belonging matters.

One Compass parent shared that what stood out most wasn’t just how her son would learn here, it was how he would feel here. Known. Welcomed. Part of a community.

As our scholars settle into a new year, that’s the kind of goodness we love seeing take shape every day: relationships growing, confidence building and scholars discovering that this is a place where they belong!

One week from today...our halls will be full again. 💙

Behind the scenes, our teachers and staff have been hard at work preparing classrooms, learning together, and getting everything ready to welcome our scholars back.

This school year will bring familiar faces, new faces, fresh beginnings, and countless opportunities to learn and grow together. We can't wait for our Compass community to come back together.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹. 📚

This past week, our faculty had the privilege of learning from 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 as we explored Gullah Geechee language and culture and the important role language plays in identity, connection, and learning.

Her presentation invited us to think more deeply about the power of language and the important role it plays in shaping identity, fostering connection, and supporting meaningful learning for every scholar.

As we prepare to welcome our scholars back, we're grateful for opportunities like this that help us continue growing as educators and creating classrooms where every child feels seen, valued, and supported.

📚 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲!

Some books are more than stories...they become memories.

This week, Mr. Tisdale is sharing one of his all-time favorite books, 𝙊𝙝, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙔𝙤𝙪'𝙡𝙡 𝙂𝙤! by Dr. Seuss. It was a gift from his aunt when he graduated high school, and later became a tradition he shared with students because the meaning of the story changes as you grow.

This week's challenge is simple: 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲.

🤝 Partnership Wednesday | A New Chapter Begins
Some of the most meaningful work starts long before the results can be measured.
This year, we're proud to begin training teachers at Compass Collegiate Academy, a Title 1 charter school in North Charleston.
This is just the beginning, and we can't wait to share more of this journey with you in the months ahead.

One of the best ways to strengthen reading comprehension is surprisingly simple: 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

This week's tip from Ms. Simpson encourages families to close the book and let their child become the storyteller. As they retell the story in their own words, they're practicing sequencing, recalling details, building vocabulary, and growing confidence as communicators.

👀 We spy a familiar face...it's our very own Ms. DeGruy!

We loved this recent post from the Lowcountry Literacy Project about multi-sensory learning. Their reminder that children learn best by seeing, hearing, saying, and doing is exactly why strong literacy instruction matters.

What does multisensory really mean?
It means teaching reading in a way that engages more than just the eyes and ears.
In a multisensory classroom, students are seeing, hearing, saying, and doing. They might:
🗣️Use their finger tips to trace letters while saying the sounds with a keyword
👂 Hear a word and tap out each sound
🖐️ Build words with manipulatives
✏️ Writing the letters they are learning to read

Why does it matter?
The more pathways we use to learn, the stronger the connections become in the brain. Multisensory instruction helps all students learn to read—and is especially powerful for those who need additional support.

This week's tip from 𝗠𝘀. 𝗣𝗶ñ𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀 is all about building Spanish vocabulary through everyday play. Whether you're sorting colorful treats, practicing new words, or reading a bilingual story together, these little moments help grow confidence, curiosity, and language skills.

✨ This week's challenge: Read a bilingual story together! As you read, look at the pictures, talk about the characters, name colors or objects in both English and Spanish, and practice repeating a few new Spanish words along the way.

Everyday activities can become meaningful learning opportunities, one word at a time. ❤️
