As part of an ongoing effort between the Charleston County Parks planning and maintenance teams, six acres of wildflowers and grasses were planted last week in the McLeod Plantation Historic Site field along Folly Road.

The seeds were purchased and donated by the Charleston County Parks Foundation. Our hope is that the field will provide native pollinators, birds and other wildlife a home while also giving McLeod Plantation Historic Site visitors with a space to stroll after a tour.

This morning we welcomed food historian and documentarian Julian Gooding for his ongoing series about foodways.

Participants learned more about the art of pickling vegetables using simple, time-saving techniques that preserve flavor and freshness.

The Huguenots, French Protestants who fled religious persecution in the late 17th century, brought their tradition of pickling to the American South. Vegetables like cucumbers, cabbage, and peppers were pickled, and their influence helped shape Southern cuisine giving rise to beloved dishes such as pickled okra and other Southern pickles.

This program is discounted through the support of the Charleston County Parks Foundation.
