Frank Veltri Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

Frank Veltri Annual Thanksgiving Dinner To share information about Veltri's Annual Thanksgiving Dinner in Charleston, WV. George’s Orthodox Church on Court Street.

Since 1966 the Frank Veltri Thanksgiving Dinner has provided Charleston’s neediest residents with the compassion and quality food. When he died in 2001, Veltri left behind a large endowment fund, managed by the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, to ensure that the dinners would continue every year. However, the event is also made possible by folks who have returned every Thanksgiving for decades t

o help prepare the meals. Those who knew Frank Veltri remember him as an unpretentious character who always had an unlit cigar in his mouth, and whose kindness matched his generosity. He owned the former Holley and Worthy hotels on Quarrier Street, and allowed scores of struggling people without permanent housing or nearby family to stay. When the Holley Hotel closed the dinner was then moved to First Baptist Church on Shrewsbury Street, and in 2020 was St. In 2016, the Frank Veltri Thanksgiving Dinner will be its 50th Dinner. Volunteers are a key part of this day. With volunteers we are able to prepare over 1,700 meals to be delivered to Charleston area hi-rises to residents without a means to attend the dinner. Another 200 to 250 meals will be prepared for those who attend the meal, which begins at 12 noon on Thanksgiving Day.
