The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is pleased to pass along the following update from Justice William R. "Bill" Wooton:

“I want to thank everyone for their prayers and best wishes for my complete recovery. I was feeling a bit under the weather yesterday and had apparently become quite dehydrated, which triggered my sudden illness during Wednesday’s oral arguments. I’m grateful for the swift action of my colleagues, Court security and first responders who quickly came to my aid. After an evaluation at the hospital and influx of fluids, I’m happy to report that I am feeling much better today and have returned to work at the Court. Again, I want to thank everyone for their concerns and well wishes and am grateful to be able to get back to work for the people of West Virginia.”

COURT STATEMENT: During oral arguments this morning, Justice William R. “Bill” Wooton experienced a medical incident while on the bench. Arguments were stopped and emergency personnel called in to treat the situation. Justice Wooton was conscious, alert and conversing with first responders as they treated him. He was then taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

The Court has canceled its oral arguments for the remainder of the day and hearings will be rescheduled.

The Fall Term of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia begins today at the state Capitol in Charleston. Justices will hear arguments in a host of cases during the term, which runs through Nov. 13.

Oral arguments begin today at 10 a.m. Details on the Court's docket and a link to the live stream of arguments can be found at www.courtswv.gov.

Tomorrow, Sept. 2, marks the beginning of the Supreme Court's Fall Term. To mark the occasion, and the 50th anniversary of the Judicial Reorganization Amendment to the State Constitution, The West Virginia State Bar & West Virginia Bar Association are hosting a reception for members, judicial officers and legal staff from 3-5 p.m. in the Great Hall outside the House of Delegates Chamber in the Capitol. Justices of the Supreme Court will join and address the reception following the conclusion of the day's argument docket.
