Happy West Virginia Day!

West Virginia entered the Union on June 20, 1863, becoming the 35th state during the Civil War.

Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a proclamation recognizing June 20, 2026, as West Virginia Day, celebrating the 163rd anniversary of West Virginia's admission to the Union and encouraging all West Virginians to reflect on the State's remarkable history while looking ahead to an even brighter future.

The proclamation also recognizes the countless contributions West Virginians have made through military service, industry, agriculture, education, public service, arts and culture, and the preservation of the State's unique heritage.

Today we celebrate the natural beauty of the Mountain State and the enduring values embodied in the State motto, Montani Semper Liberi - "Mountaineers Are Always Free."

Maj. Gen. Jim Seward addressed the graduating teens at The American Legion Mountaineer Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary West Virginia Rhododendron Girls State on June 12 and 13, 2026, respectively.

As the West Virginia TAG, Maj. Gen. Seward spoke about leadership, duty, and what service means to West Virginians throughout history and today.

The West Virginia Army National Guard supported both events.

During Girls State at Davis & Elkins College, Staff Sgt. Gabriel Jordan and Sgt. 1st Class Stephanie Ibarra offered insight on a career in the National Guard at the Career Fair and Benefits Brief. WVANG Airman Aleigha Hill, a Girls State alum, introduces MG Seward.

During Boys State at WVU Jackson's Mill, Staff Sgt. Josh Simmons, Sgt. David Hunt and Staff Sgt. Michael McDaniel gave a class on basic small unit tactics and ran through some defensive scenarios involving personnel and infrastructure, as well as a career brief.

American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are week-long summer leadership and civics programs for high school juniors. Students run mock governments at the city, county, and state levels to learn about the democratic process, leadership, and the responsibilities of citizenship.

Communication is critical when every second counts. 📡

Members of the 130th Airlift Wing command team received training on the Joint Incident Site Communications Capability (JISCC) at McLaughlin Air National Guard Base, June 7, 2026.

Because West Virginia and Pennsylvania National Guard operate within FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 3, training like this strengthens interoperability and ensures both states are prepared to respond together when needed.

Quick reactions; selfless service!

On June 7, 2026, during their daily physical fitness training while on mission in Washington, D.C., Spc. Minniti, Spc Jenkins and Pfc. Rucker led by Sgt. Jurkovitz helped a civilian having a medical emergency.

Using their training and quick decision-making, the Soldiers immediately rendered first aid while 1LT Smith contacted 911. The team remained on scene, assisting until emergency responders arrived and ensuring the individual was stable and receiving proper care before continuing their mission.

Their actions reflect the Army Values and the commitment to serving others whenever and wherever needed.

Well done, Team Mountaineer.
