We are excited to offer a beautiful original work of art by Charleston, Missouri, artist Dessie D. Gross.

Dessie graciously donated this painting to the rescue squad to raffle off to help support the organization.

Dessie Gross has deep roots in Charleston. In her own words, Charleston has always been her hometown and a place she is proud to call home. She graduated from Charleston High School in 1963 and spent much of her life connected to the community. Her love for Charleston and the surrounding area became a major source of inspiration for her artwork.

Dessie began painting later in life, finding inspiration in the people, farms and rural landscapes that surrounded her. She has painted old barns, grain elevators, farm machinery, flowers and people, with a particular appreciation for the hardworking men and women who helped make the area what it is today. Her work reflects her love for the community and her desire to honor the people and traditions of the region.

Her artwork has been displayed in the Charleston area, and her paintings have been featured as part of local community events. A recent account of Charleston’s Dogwood and Azalea Festival noted her paintings on display at the Mississippi County Historical Society.

The painting being offered is a beautiful original work by Dessie D. Gross. The artwork captures the peaceful, natural beauty of the countryside through her distinctive artistic style and reflects the appreciation for nature and rural life that is evident throughout her work.

The Mississippi County Rescue Squad is excited to announce that, with the assistance of Citizens Bank of Charleston, we were able to secure a $30,000 grant through the FHLB Des Moines – Member Impact Fund.

This money will be used to update six of our outdated handheld radios that our members use during emergencies. The radios that the squad currently uses are over 10 years old, and this upgrade will greatly enhance our team's communication and safety.

We are incredibly grateful for this support and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our community response efforts.

Good afternoon,

I am pleased to announce that our annual Cheeseburger Day fundraiser has been scheduled for September 11, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The event will be held at the Charleston First Assembly of God, located at 608 South Main, Charleston, MO. Tickets for the cheeseburger meal are available for $15 each.

In addition to the meal, we will be holding a drawing this year for a large, handmade quilt beautifully crafted by Ruth Watson. Tickets for the quilt drawing are $10 each, and the winner will be drawn at the event at 6:00 PM.

We look forward to your support and hope to see you there.

N409AE BELL HELICOPTER 206L-4 Chapmansboro, Tennessee

Pilot Flight Time:
ATPL - 4821 hours (Total, all aircraft), 691 hours (Total, this make and model)

The air medical helicopter had responded to a call for service, and after landing was sitting idle with the engine running and its rotors turning while the flight medical crew and two local volunteer fire department personnel transferred a patient from a stretcher into the helicopter. Once the patient was loaded, a flight medical crew member told the fire department volunteers they could leave the rotor disk area while they finished securing the patient inside the helicopter. A flight medical crew member then observed one of the volunteers move the stretcher back and away from the helicopter; however, the two volunteers did not leave the rotor disc area. A few moments later, a flight medical crew member watched the unattended and unsecured stretcher roll downhill toward the helicopter’s spinning tail rotor. The stretcher collided with the tail boom and the tail rotor resulting in substantial damage to both tail rotor blades and minor damage to the tail boom.

Probable Cause and Findings:
Failure of the volunteer fire department personnel to properly monitor and secure a stretcher, which resulted in it rolling into the helicopter’s tail rotor.
