As we enter the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, we are joining partners across South Carolina in raising awareness about the importance of safe driving. This statewide initiative from the SC Department of Public Safety and SC Highway Patrol focuses on reducing crashes and preventing fatalities during one of the most dangerous times of the year on our roads.

In Charleston County, Driving Under the Influence continues to be one of the most common charges at the local detention center. This underscores how critical it is for all of us to make responsible choices behind the wheel.

We encourage everyone in our community to practice safe driving habits:
• Always drive sober
• Slow down and follow posted speed limits
• Avoid distractions, especially mobile devices
• Buckle up, every ride, every time

Your choices can prevent tragedies and save lives. Let’s work together to keep our roads safer for everyone this summer.

With more than a decade of local data, the CJCC is uniquely positioned to dig into questions being raised nationally right here at home — including whether women in Charleston County are being booked into jail at a higher rate than men. Explore the findings in our newest Research Brief!

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: Streetlights reduced gun violence by 21%. The City of Philadelphia recently upgraded 34,374 streetlights to LED across one-third of the city. The research team used a difference-in-differences design and controlled for pre-existing crime patterns. Here's what the citywide study found:

• 21% reduction in outdoor gun violence
• 15% decrease in overall outdoor nighttime crimes
• 20% drop in outdoor violent crimes at night
• 16% decrease in outdoor property crimes at night
• Gun crimes fell 20% at night vs. 4% during the day

Implications? Improvements to Public Safety can extend beyond traditional policing models.

The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council works to make our criminal justice system more effective, just, and equitably applied. We use data to address issues such as jail population, behavioral health, including substance use and mental health, to enhance public safety and meaningfully address crime.

We meet with community members across Charleston County to hear their concerns, and ideas, then we collaborate with the local justice leaders who can address those issues. We have community education events as we work together to improve public safety, community well-being, and our criminal justice system.
