Jefferson County Commission Seeks Artists for Public Art Opportunities

CHARLES TOWN, WV (September 8, 2026) – The Jefferson County Commission is seeking to connect with West Virginia artists who may be interested in future mural and public art opportunities within Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Commission recently completed the installation of a mural outside of the County Commission meeting room and is excited about partnering with local artists with experience or interest in creating murals and large-scale public artwork similar to the recently installed mural. The County seeks to establish connections with artists who may be considered as specific projects and funding opportunities as they become available.

Artists with experience in mural painting, public art, large-scale artwork, or similar projects are encouraged to express their interest. West Virginia-based artists, including artists from Jefferson County and the Eastern Panhandle, are especially encouraged to respond.

Interested artists are asked to provide their name and contact information, a brief description of their artistic background and experience, and examples of previous work or a link to an online portfolio, if available.

Submitting information through this call for interest does not constitute an application for a specific project or guarantee selection for future work. Additional project requirements, scope, compensation, timelines, and selection procedures will be provided as individual opportunities are developed.

🇺🇸 Labor Day Closure — Monday, September 7, 2026

Jefferson County government offices will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Essential public safety and emergency services will continue operating without interruption.

We extend our appreciation to the workers and public servants who contribute to the strength and well-being of our community.

🗺 GIS Maps 101: Learn More During GIS Day!

As part of GIS Day on November 18, 2026, the Jefferson County GIS Department will be teaching GIS Maps 101, an opportunity for residents to learn more about the mapping tools and resources available through Jefferson County.

During GIS Maps 101, participants will learn:

📍 What GIS maps and tools are available through the county.

📊 What information and resources these maps provide.

🗺 How to read, understand, and make the most of GIS maps and data.

GIS Department staff will also be available throughout the event to answer questions and hear your ideas, suggestions, and recommendations for future maps, tools, and GIS projects.

Members of the Jefferson County Cultural Taskforce had the opportunity to participate in the Walk About Nothing on August 19!

The Walk About Nothing is a fun way to explore downtown Charles Town while learning more about the local businesses, organizations, and people helping shape our community.

During the walk, Cultural Taskforce members and members of the public got a sneak peek at a new sourdough bakery and learned more about Mosaic Market Haus, which features local artisans, makers, gifts, home décor, and more.

The Cultural Taskforce is an employee-led initiative, dedicated to creating opportunities for county staff to step outside of the office and connect with residents, local organizations, businesses, and municipalities throughout Jefferson County.

We would like to thank Charles Town Now for creating such a great opportunity for residents, visitors, and community members to experience downtown Charles Town firsthand and learn more about the people and businesses that make our community special!❤

The Jefferson County GIS Department is hosting GIS Day, and we want you to join us!

What is GIS?
GIS, or Geographic Information System, is a powerful mapping technology used to locate, identify, and analyze important information on a map; from utility lines and gas pipelines to roads, buildings, and other critical infrastructure.

GIS plays an important role every day in emergency response, public safety, water and gas utilities, planning and engineering, and many other fields.
