During last week's Session, the Commissioners signed eight resolutions for teams from Berkshire, Cardinal, Chardon, and West Geauga High Schools that participated in the 2026 Northeast Ohio Area II Envirothon competition.

Two teams from West Geauga, the Eco Wolves and Green Claws, placed first and second in the competition, respectively. They are competing at the State Envirothon Tournament in Steubenville this week!

Envirothon is an incredibly engaging and rewarding experience for high school students and the BOCC is honored to commend them for their hard work.

The Geauga County Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Response Team operates under the Geauga County Emergency Management Agency and is dedicated to safely and effectively handling hazardous materials incidents in the County.🚨

The Team is led by Coordinator Aric Anderson and has three sub-coordinators, 20 technicians, and 40 operations-level individuals.

Four fire departments in the County make up a majority of the Team:

🚒Burton Fire Department houses members and the main spill response trailer.

🚒Hambden Fire Department houses members and a small spill response trailer.

🚒Middlefield Fire Department houses members, entry equipment, technical rescue equipment, grain bin rescue equipment, and confined space gear.

🚒Parkman Township Fire Department houses a unique asset--a fire engine capable of spraying high-capacity foam in case of a hazardous materials fire, also equipped with basic spill response equipment.

Other participating fire departments in the County have at least one member on the Team in case of a large-scale incident. With the current membership and equipment, the Haz-Mat Team is fully capable of responding to hazardous materials incidents in Geauga County or in neighboring counties if called upon. ✅

The Team works in partnership with the Ohio EPA and Ohio Dept. Natural Resources Oil & Gas Division to ensure all incidents in Geauga County are handled appropriately from start to finish.

📡When emergencies happen, Geauga County Emergency Management Agency is there to support first responders. 🚨🚒

Agency personnel work on scene with incident command by coordinating response efforts, providing valuable expertise, and keeping the public informed.

When severe weather like tornados impact Geauga County, EMA personnel assess hazards and impacts, such as identifying damaged or destroyed property. The agency documents risks, establishes recovery priorities, and connects the community with the support it needs after an emergency.

🌪️A recent example is the severe storms on March 31st, 2026. During the storms, EMA staff monitored the weather, power outages, and emergency incident calls; checked in with first responders for needs; and worked with the utilities on restoration efforts. ⛈️

Based on reports from first responders, EMA staff began to assess storm damage, alerting the National Weather Service (NWS) when evidence of a tornado was located. That damage survey resulted in a confirmed tornado event report from the NWS.

EMA has an interactive Hazard Mitigation Outreach website which includes a tornado risk map: https://hazard-mitigation-planning-geauga.hub.arcgis.com/
