Geauga SWCD news release: Learn how to Grow a Beautiful Lawn ~ Organically

Join Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District on Tuesday, June 9th at the Bainbridge Library (17222 Snyder Rd, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023) to learn practical tips and easy steps for safer, chemical-free lawns and landscapes. Mel Hauser from Good Nature Organic Lawn Care will dig deeper into what organic lawn care means and how it nurtures healthy soil. Discover practices to grow a healthy lawn while reducing chemical use and costs. Learn more about natural plant-based products, pest solutions, and tips for a year-round healthy lawn. Attendees will receive a rain gauge to help track your yard’s precipitation and landscape watering needs (limited quantity, one per household, provided by Enbridge/Western Reserve Land Conservancy Watershed Grant funding).

Ever wondered what’s living in your local creek?

This summer, grab your water shoes and join the Geauga Stream Team! We’re diving into area streams to investigate water quality by searching for cool aquatic critters like crayfish, dragonflies, water pennies, and caddisflies.

As a volunteer, you’ll help us collect official data for the Ohio DNR Scenic Rivers Program using kick seine nets, water chemistry kits, and more.

The Details:
 All ages welcome!
 Free to join.
 Meets twice a month.
 Join us for one outing or for all!

Contact Colleen Sharp for more information or group opportunities (440) 279-1766 or [email protected].

“Soil. Where it all Begins" Poster Contest

The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) proclaimed April 25 – May 6, 2026, as Stewardship Week, marking the 71st year of the national event. In celebration of Stewardship Week, Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District will be sponsoring a Poster Contest. Corresponding with stewardship week the theme is “Soil. Where it all Begins." Join us as we celebrate the incredible power of soil to support life in all its forms. Soil is not just the ground we walk on. It is the starting point for healthy food, clean water, thriving habitats, and resilient communities. From backyard gardens to forests and city parks, everything begins with what is beneath our feet.

The Advanced Wonders of Watersheds is a tried-and-true, yet newly-adapted 3-day program that investigates water quality, soil health, climate, land use issues, and our link to the Lake Erie Basin. This intensive experience includes scientific investigations, hands-on and inquiry-based activities, and Lake Erie data collection with researchers from Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Reserve. Join us and learn new ways to meet content standards through engaging lessons, outdoor experiences, and real-world applications of increasingly important water quality and land use issues. Participants receive various curriculum guides and fantastic resources as part of this Teachers on the Estuary (T.O.T.E.) workshop. One or two graduate credits are available through Ashland University. The registration fee for this workshop is $295 and covers the cost of all expenses excluding transportation and graduate credits.

Area 2 Envirothon includes teams from 17 counties, all competing for a chance to advance to the state contest this June. The dedication and hard work on display—rain and all—made this event truly memorable. And we could not hold the event without our generous sponsors like The Farmstand on River Road and CS Packaging, LLC for making the station award medals. Everyone loved them. Thank you!
