Parkinson’s Support Group – Speech Pathologist
Katherine Mayer, MS, CCC/SLP, a speech Language pathologist with University Hospital Geauga Medical Center, gave a presentation to the Parkinson’s Support Group at the Chardon Senior Center on Tuesday, September 15.
Katherine explained the role of Speech-Language Pathology in addressing speech, swallowing, and thinking abilities—all of which can be affected by Parkinson’s.
Katherine also discussed LSVT LOUD and BIG therapy, an intensive, evidence-based treatment approach for people with Parkinson’s disease. She then introduced the EMST (Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer), and other devices designed to strengthen expiratory muscles and improve cough strength. She explained how improved cough strength has been associated with better health and longevity.
Katherine shared her enthusiasm for treating both inpatients and outpatients with a variety of neurological conditions. She also discussed research-supported strategies that can help people maximize their abilities following a Parkinson’s diagnosis.
