Last Friday, May 29, was a busy and engaging day for seniors participating in programs offered by the Geauga County Department on Aging!
Throughout the afternoon, seniors attended a variety of educational and wellness classes across the county. At the Geauga County Office Building, participants enjoyed an America 250 event - The History of Abigail Adams and the Adams Family, presented by Henry Adams on the third floor, while Matter of Balance participants took their last class and graduated, celebrating the completion of their class on the first floor.
Meanwhile, at the West Geauga Senior Center, Dr. McGuire led an informative presentation, Over-the-Counter Medications: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, helping seniors better understand the medications they use every day.

Learning for a Lifetime

The Geauga County Department on Aging, in partnership with Kent State University Geauga Campus, welcomed local seniors to the annual “Learning for a Lifetime” event held Wednesday, May 27, at the Kent State Geauga Campus in Burton. More than 150 seniors participated in this year’s program.

Participants created their own personalized schedules by selecting three classes from a list of 20 different engaging programs. Each class lasted approximately one hour and featured a combination of PowerPoint presentations and/or hands-on learning opportunities. The diverse selection of classes provided seniors with a unique opportunity to stay active, engaged, and intellectually challenged.

Class topics covered a wide range of interests, including history, health and wellness, technology, art, and school funding.

Instructors included Kent State professors, former educators, University Hospitals specialists, retired firefighters, and fellow seniors who shared their knowledge and experiences.

Throughout the day, attendees explored topics such as local history, navigating digital services, expanding retirement options, genetics, and ways to improve their overall health and wellness. The event once again demonstrated that learning truly is a lifelong journey.

Attention Parkman Seniors

The Parkman Township Trustees are joining forces with the Geauga County Department on Aging for the 2026 Parkman Senior Trash Pick-Up Days June 25 and 26.

Please have items outside home or garage on Wednesday, June 24, the evening before the pick-up.

Sign Up Is EASY-HERE’S HOW: First, register and complete the trash pick-up intake with the Geauga County Department on Aging at 440-279-2130 by June 18 or earlier. Please note, to receive trash pick-up assistance, you must be 60 years of age or older, live in Parkman Township and be registered with the Department on Aging for 2026.

• What Parkman Twp. will take: Refrigerators dehumidifiers, and window air conditioners with Freon, car batteries, lawn mowers, tires on or off the rim – 4 per load and appliances, wood, pipe or other large items should be reduced to 6’ or less lengths. Consolidate all small materials in strong boxes or containers. Please note the following guidelines: To prevent possible bed bug transferal (or other pest), all mattresses, couches and upholstered furniture MUST be wrapped in plastic and taped securely or they will not be taken.

• What Parkman Twp. won’t take: Construction/remodeling debris, liquids, paint or other hazardous materials, rocks, yard waste, or household garbage. Residents are reminded that newspapers, magazines and cardboard are recyclable. Separate them out for recycling. Residents are also asked not to bring items that can easily be disposed of in the resident’s weekly curbside pickup.

The Parkman Township Road Crew and the Department on Aging cannot enter homes. All refuse items must be outside garages, out buildings or in the driveway. Please DO NOT leave items by curbside.

Limit to 10 household items per home Please.

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month. This year, Geauga County Job and Family Services Adult Protective Services will be offering a 15-minute Dementia Experience for registered attendees on June 1st, conducted by Geauga County Department on Aging 's very own Vicki Zanella, Adult Day Service Coordinator.

These 15-minute sessions will mimic what is it like for those living in our community who have dementia. This offers a firsthand look at their struggles and provides valuable insight into their world.
